So the idle jet on the new Mexi-carb was clogged. Had time to swap it in today and had the same issue until I remembered to check the jet in question and tightened it down (Doh!).
Wow. What a difference. No hesitation, bogging, bucking, stuttering, dying at stops, smooth low idle, downright spooky.
The old carb was giving me pre-ignition issues under load in fourth gear, so I adjusted the new carb with my timing at 6 degrees rather than 5, and the problem is less severe, but still there. I'll make the investment and try a tank of premium before backing the timing up any further.
I think the problem is probably because my compression is a bit high with heads slapped onto drop in 87 mm cylinder/pistons.
Am I on the right path?

Layet it be! Freedom at last!
Check your 3,000 rpm timing and make your pre-ignition cessation adjustments from there only.

So I should not be afraid of sevuuhhhn, or even sevuuhhhn point fuhhiive, if that is the will of the blessed 3k rpm saviour of pre-ignition turpitudes granting me the joy of returning to the less financially challenging altar of regular?

Tell it. . .
I will never run my Volkswagens on anything but regular or less. But I have certified 7.3:1 compression, too.
