Anyone know of this wheel?

Can barely see it on left side of picture. Notice the large horn-button.

Anyone got one for sale, please let me know: [email protected]

60-74, then splines changed from mid-74 and up. They use the same splines as watercooled VWs

Hi.
While on the topic of sports steering wheels, I need to ask a question. I met a fella yesterday who owned a Dyno shop & car parts business in the late 60s through to the early 80s. He showed me some of the stuff he still has in a big shed. Not much VW stuff sadly, but the was an item of interest for VW. It is a steering wheel very similar to the one in the top photo, but a different horn button. It has a solid timber rim, 3 alloy spokes & was made by "Les Leston". Does that ring a bell for anyone. Apparently this Les guy was big in the hot stuff for the English cars etc, but did some VW stuff. I am only new to this, so would appreciate some advice.
Regards,
Rob J

The Les Leston wheel was more popular with the 356 crowd back then. However, today they seem to be focused on totally stock restorations.

Les Leston is of Speedwell fame... the Mini people like his stuff. Speedwell sold some steering wheels for VWs. Search on ebay and you usually see a few Leston wheels for sale at any given time.

That steering wheel was one of a few designs sold by authorized VW dealers in the early 1970's and were known as 'Formula Vee' steering wheels.....
Have a look at the accessory catalogues for the years 1970-73 on this site http://www.webwrench.com/airaccess/index.shtml and you'll see there were about 3 steering wheels available 70-73 all called Formula Vee.....

This particular wheel was introduced for the '72 model year as it has a very deeply set hub, to clear the column-mounted wash/wipe stalk that was new for 1972......

I have just been lucky enough to acquire one of these wheels (it just needs a lick of paint, and no it isn't for sale) and was going to post a thread on here asking about it, but then came across this thread.....
If anyone can give me an idea of its current market value, and just how rare they are,I'd be very grateful.....

Nessy

I have one of those wheels on my 72 Beetle.

I bought it 12 months ago off eBay for £125 - it had never been fitted to a car and had the original box. The only other one I have seen for sale was also on eBay, was used, and went for about £45.

Hope this helps Wink

While we're on the topic of steering wheels... I was told this was from a Sun Bug, is that correct? What year? Note the VW stamp in the metal. I just thought it looked nice on my ghia

Not the SunBug, but the 73 Sports Beetle.

It was not exclusive to the Sports Bug though. I saw one on a Rabbit once.

The tiny VW logo in the bottom spoke was originally painted orange. The screws were hex drive, and black.

This is an all original Sun Bug. The wheel is the standard late model padded Super wheel.

Hi.
Here is a photo of that Les Leston wheel I mentioned before. looks similar in design to that top one. It is NOS & has VW under the horn cap.
Any ideas?

Appears to be Steering wheel Number 8 on page 13 of the 1971 Accessory catalogue in this link http://www.webwrench.com/airaccess/1971catalog.shtml

i have one of the "rabbit" wheels.
it is silver instead of the black.
it has a hard rubber grip instead of the soft foam on the sportbug wheel.
still cool though

I got this steering wheel.
There´s an similar one in an VW brochure for formula vee accessoires. But it`s leather wrapped an the spokes have drilled holes.
This is different. Was it an option at VW?

Those spokes look like EMPI GTV to me.
