Finally got hold of a perfect pré '65 wrap around dash !
Got a collection of all generation dashes now.
First one in the world to take a photo of them all lined up ?
Want to share some knowledge.
Some education:
1
- Pre '65 wrap around dash - only type with closed ends to align with door top trim
- No vertical bar at the speaker grille
- Grille at the back
- alu collarred holes for the grab handle
- tabs across the back for mounting
2
- '66 - '67 only dash - type with open ends
- No vertical bar at the speaker grille
- Grille at the back
- alu collarred holes for the grab handle
- tabs across the back for mounting
3
- '69 - '69 only dash - type with open ends
- Vertical bar at the speaker grille
- No grille at the back
- Open holes for the grab handle
- tabs across the back for mounting
4
- '70 to '73 dash - type with open ends
- Plastic cover at the speaker grille
- No grille at the back
- Open holes for the grab handle
- No tabs across the back for mounting
I'll let the photos speak for themselfs ! Close up photos of them all there too !
Check them out at the Type 3 parts gallery

Wouldn't #2 also be correct for 1964/1965 "N" models that didn't use the wrap around design? _________________

if i remember correctly their is more then 4 variations over the years
for deluxe and non deluxe... ect...
it would take some real research ( vw museum ) to show all the little differences and exact year breakdowns

I know there are at least 2 different types of wrap around. Early and late. But they are small differances and still fit.
Nice shot of them all! Back when I had several wrap arounds.

Just so you know, #4 doesn't fit a 70, it's for a 71 to 73. A 70 uses the 69 style dash pad, due to still using an air box without a fan motor and torsion bars for the hood springs. I've got a 70 Fastback here (the wife's car) and I should know some of the little idiosychrocies (sp?) about them. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

the differences between the early and later are the foam filled insides right? the earlier cars have the more solid dashes and wrap pieces while the later 64/65 are hollow? _________________ '54 Kombi | '57 356 Coupe | '57 Samba | '62 Notchback | '63 Beetle | '66 Pigalle Sunroof Squareback |

EVERY '66- '67 I've EVER seen had the vertical bar in the speaker grille, like #3. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

You could probably make it work. The dash pad will fit, but a wraparound pad, the pieces that go throughout the car to match, doorpanels, and armrests will probably cost you more than you paid for your '68.
Also, divorce isn't cheap. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

Wraparounds have a pair of "horns" at the ends that mate up with the other wraparound pieces that are at the top of each inner panel from front to rear on early cars and "S" models. It gives the impression that the dash "wraps around" the entire interior of the car, hence the name. It's hard to see from Berts picture what the difference is. Go look at some "S" models or '62- 63 cars in the Gallery and you'll get the idea. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.
