| Are there any fundamental differences between my '73 Ghia engine and the engines used in the last of the beetles? I mean, I know about EFI, but what about the maintanence regemine? Do those engines still need things like the 6000 mile valve adjustments? |

they have hyd. lifters so they go much father before needing valve work. i don't know how long though. they are the quietest running one made too, I believe they have paper air filters, so less oil to change. and they have a external oil filter, i put one on my ghia. otherwise they really probably only need the 3k oil and filter change i think. ive always been real curious about the EFI set up and the power it makes _________________ "Fiberglass is for boats and race cars-Steel is real-fix it right the first time"-Wolff

The oil filter is the only thing I see that's an improvement. _________________ 1974 Thing -- under the knife

They also have a cast crankshaft, and different rods. Ok for stock, but I wouldn't use them for HP. At most a set of Kadrons, 1.25 rockers and a single quiet pack header.
They also have a fully electronic distributor.

| I was thinking about trying to get one for a good reliable daily driver. I want to build it so that I don't have to spend half of my saturdays doing maintanence. What's the maintainance schedule for these engines? |

It only takes 15min to adjust your valves , you can have them done before you oil is done draining (make sure engine is cold) . TROY
PS , we put a new Mexican longblock (solid lifter) in my neighbors car last year , no problems so far . _________________ Pres. Rivercity VW Club www.rcvwclub.org

Valves and oil every 3000 miles. If you get the silicone valve cover gaskets from aircooled, you will not have to change the gasket often. Adjust the carb twice a year, fuel lines once a year, air filter every 15,000 miles, plugs every 30,000...
Doesn't sound to bad to me. |

Valve adjustments are not necessary, that's the point of hydraulic lifters. I've got 42,000 km on mine and the valve covers have never been off. |

| I don't recall having seen advertisements for them, but can I get hydraulic lifters for my original engine? |

| Some people badmouth those engines but if you figure how many Mexican Beetles have been built and how many are on the road vs. the failures you'll see that it's a good idea to use them for daily drivers. Of course the quality isn't the same as a German engine but they're good enough for daily drivers. |

I was just in Mexico this week and I was amazed at the amount of Mex Beetles I saw cruising happily down the road at x-way speeds in 95+ heat. _________________ Jack

The Mexican fuel injected engines had hydraulic lifters. This engines where made for the Mexican market. In all Mexico made/makes six different cases. The case for the hydraulic lifter has a different size lifter bore. Most of the long blocks available in the states are for a carburetor setup that uses manual lifters. I know that both FI and carbureted complete engines have been imported, as well and long block only for a US Type I replacement. I guess the question is which one did you get, or are you planning on getting.

That's what I'm talking about. Derv; I notice that you live in Oak Park. That's a beautiful area; I visited in 2005 and loved it. The hometown of my favorite architect of all time Frank Lloyd Wright..... |

I think that it doesn't matter if the engines are up to the standard set by the German engines. I think that it only matters if the quality of the engine is suffucuent for the application. |
