NOTHING sounds lke a stock exhaust except a stock exhaust. ANY other exhaust system will sound different.

you may be able to run baffle-less tailpipes which will increase flow a little bit (not huge) and cut the chirp (check the real source or motorworks). in order to achieve what you're looking for, you might have to go to a header which invites a mess of other concerns (heater boxes, preheat pipes, etc.). there is one advertised in the mags called the euro-tuck whose pipes exit the stock holes... six bills, though. i'm running an abarth repro on my 1600. i *think* it does flow better, but its loud as hell.

Yeah, i'm looking to build a 2017 or so, and don't want to sound like a honda when I'm idling or putting around town, but be able to take full advantage of the added displacement by flowing more when I really romp on it.

if your motor is this large, you will need* dual carbs and a header exhaust... just not enough air flows through either (stock) to work well in a motor much larger than 1600cc. and with a motor over 1776, you'll likely need a carb bigger than 40mm -- kadrons might work if you re-jet and re-venturi... but to the point, you will definitely* need a larger exhaust. check out the dual quietpacks or the eurotuck mentioned above. and unfortunately, neither will sound close to stock -- your motor is nearly twice the size of a stock motor in 1960. alternately, a 1776 with dual kads and a peashooter will get you going plenty fast. question is, with stock brakes, can you stop as fast? with stock suspension, can you handle it as well?...

im working on a 2017cc engine also, i know i dont want my bug to sound stock though, i want it to have a nice beefed up sound. i plan on running a 1 5/8 merged header with a bugpack mondo muffler and when i really want to mess around i plan on putting a stinger. if your going to have that big of an engine, why are you going to restrict its breathing ?

I know stock brakes will be nowhere near enough, which is why I've been posting about stock ride height 5 lug disc conversions. As far as handling I'm gonna stick gas shocks on all 4 corners, new h/d front sway bar, and a camber compensator in the back. I'm either going 1776 or 2017 depending on what my cash flow looks like going into next year. The way it's looking right now it looks like it'll be a 1776, but things can change.
