One thing you can do is to keep the fuel filters out of the engine compartment.

If you replace the fuel lines on an annual basis, use hose clamps ,and inspect for fuel leaks on occasion you wont have engine fires. Good luck. |

Check your fuel lines. Make sure the hoses are solid, not rubbing on anything, clamped well, and carry a fire extinguisher. |

One thing that gets missed a lot is the old style fuel pumps and how they can start fires. The fittings that the hoses go on will sometimes come loose and can fall out causing gas to shoot everywhere on the engine. Make sure they are tight. Tap them in if they are not and you may want to use something to seal them in if your pump has a history of doing this. Or just replace it with an aftermarket pump. They have solid fittings that won't come off. |

Good point about those brass nipples loosening up in the potmetal castings.
For Vintage Originality Enthusiasts, I recommend serious cleaning of inside fuel pump opening and outside of brass nipple and a *little "knurling" with toothed pliers on the brass nipple, send it home with a tad of epoxy, no room for errors here, and it will look dead-nuts original and it will not come off. . . ever. . . again.
