I run K-800's on my "street car". There is a reason. |

Straight cut gears should be used when you have triple or K800 springs. |

My straight cuts can barely be heard inside the car and not at all outside. Maybe my fart-can covers up the sound. |
ditto. Can't hear mine at all except for a little bit of chatter at idle. I would actually like to hear it more, but not much I can do about it now. |

OK, This comes up every so often.
I'll give my usual spiel..
My opinions as a part time engine builder for 20-some years:
I recommend straight cut gears on any HiPo customer enigine builds (and my own).
Anything that has Dual springs or better needs them.
I have had 3 motors with Helical Aluminum gears either failed (or in the process of).
And a set of Aluminum/Steel set of Magnums rip the teeth off (lots of things wasted on that one).
I don't like "come backs". Therefore, I advise against thier use in any HiPo application for a customer's build.
Having said that. Yes, I know that many people do it all the time w/o issue.
I just ain't one of them.
It's just too risky in my own personal experience.
Plus, if you think the sound is "too loud" or obnoxious, then you're a wussie....
LOL...
Sorry Glenn.. J/K
I like the whine. It's cool.... I love it....
Long live the DdK ..... |

The only time you can hear the straight cuts in my engine is at idle, pick up the RPM and the sound is gone, and I run a fairly quiet muffler. |
2nd that! |
Then you have a nice small backlash. You got lucky. |

Nice
To each their own. I have some loud gears in my 1955 and love em. Was my daily for a couple years, never bothered me. Do what you want. Don't let people bully you into using stock gears if straight cuts are what you want. |

What brand of streigt cut's do you recommend? I'm thinking of using it in my 1915 with W120 with 1,25 ratio rockers and dual springs. |

Just remember: If you install some straight cut gears strictly for the sound, you lose all privelages of making fun of the ricers.
Nothing sounds more badder-ass than a 1776 with a set of Kadrons, a stinger, and a set of straight cuts. _________________ Eric Allred

I generally can't hear any sounds that are behind my car, so run whatever you like

So just install them for the reason I have listed above and steer clear of dis-honor. LOL....
The V-8 croud has done it for the same reasons for years.
I like Mangnum, CB, Scat, Competition Engineering, etc... As long as they are billet.
Don't get cast Dynagear or the super cheap dynagear-copies either.
The loudness of them will depend on the case and the brand of gears used.
CB's are quite for one person, and loud for another (in a different case). |

When I was a senior in High School in 1988 I was the first to have the straight cut gear deal and the whine, little 1835 with a 120 cam and some 40IDF, probably only made 110 hp but it kicked everyones ass and sounded cool at the same time, I have had the same gear set since then which is Magnum, steel on steel. Yeah I like the sound but the motor is pretty stout now being a 2276 and making just over 200 hp at 6700 RPM'S. The sound is to each and their own taste. If your making more than 170 hp you will probably want to run the straight cuts. Good luck |

I got a set of Scats in my new motor and can't tell I have them unless you really listen for it. I wanted them quiet but not that quiet. _________________ 57 Ragtop

I ran a set of dyna gears (bought at swapmeet &10.00) the year before last all season in the drag car. It runs 11.81ET 1/4 mile at best and the car is 1650lbs. I had no problem making every PRA event but one.
of course we just threw the motor together just so we could go race and it worked well so why change it. I will run the same gear this coming year and I am not worried about it. I think the Dyna gear in good enough for the street application...I'll sell you mine since it's already tested for 5.00. just kidding..
I run straight cuts in everything even the stock motors. The gears I use don't have a big giant whine. Even a stock motor pushes hard on a thrust bearing..
You can't make a wrong choice do what you like. You have enough info to make the choice...

Is that the scat drag fast gear. I have one just haven't used it as yet. Did you set the torque on the gear to 22lbs or 20lbs. |
