So I have recieved a lot of questions about this little gem, figured it was time to clear it up. Its a brand new 1951 motor that was cutapart as a display by some german model company by the name of Goff. & Co. Went from museum to show room to museum before ending out as property of Boston Engine for the last 10 years. Withuot further adiew, here are the pictures:

I got it from the museum of transportation in Brookline, and there is something about 50 years in museums rather than an engine bay that will keep these things looking pretty! Its been on loan to Bently Publishers for the last 5 years but it is time to give this thing a new home! Gonna put it up on ebay sometime soon, not sure when just yet. Need some time to get ready to see it go. Really enjoyed having it around, people always wanted to buy pieces off of it, they all look so clean and brand new, would need to point out that its a model, and taking it apart would really defeat the purpose. Not only that but that model company really had at it! They cut the fan shroud, the fuel pump, the cylinder AND the piston inside it! Anyways, the pictures show it off so much better then I can with all this rambling, so just enjoy.

Bob,

It has a VJU4BR8 distributor. That distributor was not used until 1954.

Is htis the same engine that I saw at Litchfield in 2007?

How long did that take you to catch?
Very interesting, it is quite possible that a tag written in pencil on a paper tag could be incorect. We would need to check to see if there is a serial number and check to see if the part is mismatched or if the tag is incorrect.

also are the images showing up for you? I can't see them.

Well it has been on loan for some time now, so they very well could have brought it. Would be very interested to know if ther was another one in the northeast, or the states for that matter! didn't notice the comment or your pictures the first time around.

My local VW dealership has one in their service bay. Every once in a while I hit them up to sell it to me. Some day they'll do it just to shut me up. Very Happy

Is this the ex-Ralph D. Jones display engine from Springfield, MA? Except for the coil sticker, the parts appear to be original to a 1956-58 36hp engine.

Very cool, there are a few of those around, also some random parts like individual carburetors.

The fuel pump is the 56-58 style.
The heater boxes are the 57 and earlier style.
My guess would be it's a '56 engine.

The easiest thing might be to look at the date code of the coil and reference this page to determine the month and year:
Date coding of parts from Hella/SWF/Bosch/Blaupunkt

Since someone mentioned the coil has the wrong sticker, you may want to cross-check the distributor and generator as they are also dated.

Yep, that's definitely a '56/'57 engine.

Our local VW parts supplier- VW Heritage has one on display in their showroom- a '54 engine.

looks like a mish-mosh of parts put together in the later '50s, the intake looks like one of those rare 90 degree bend '53-'54 ones, I have seen a few of these sell on e-bay over the years, very cool display piece, my dad used to have a 1940s Gravely single cylinder self propelled walk behind lawn mower at his mower dealership cut down like that, I used to spend hours looking at it , it had a hand crank to turn it over and you could watch the magneto spark the plug

Make one yourself, with a cut-away gearbox and a working starter engine so you can turn it over and watch things move Wink.

I have seen a few of those engines come up for sale through the years. I also saw a full beetle chassis, suspension tanssaxle and motor display a few years back that sold on ebay Germany. I have a collection of batteries and individual cut-away parts; fuel pumps, carbs, coils, etc. Here are a couple of the batteries.

That would be a WAY easier fix than most of them I repair...!

I agree, it is a mix of parts, but I don't see anything '51 on it. The intake is the "zwitter" one, with the thin wall, hard angle heat riser. Probably an easy part to get in the late 50s as it was inferior to the the 701Es begin used then.

Heater boxes are the '51-'57 style as Ev pointed out, I think I see the sheet metal screws in them, making them the later version of that style, probably '54 or '55 to '57.

I was just in Mark Merrill's shop this past weekend, he has one, and on a shortened, narrowed chassis so you can see the tranny and clutch and all work. It is WAY cool.....

A guy had a cutaway engine and trans FS at the last Bug-O-Rama. I was tempted, but I don't need any more crap crowding up the place.

Yup, at one point I think all dealers had them. Most of our local dealers had them on display, one or two still do.
