Make sure that the battery is out of the vehicle before you do any welding on the body.
Before I started welding on the cargo floor halves, I spread out weights (bags and boxes of tire chains that I got stuck with) on the floors above the supports. Instead of drilling holes in the floors, I tack welded the bottom of each low point of the floor to the top of each side of the cargo floor support. It worked fine but it wasn't the stock way to do it, so I am going to try using my Marquette one-sided spot welder, next time, and see if it does the job (I hate plug welds). _________________ Don't worry; be happy. If it's not belly pan bus, wield the floor to the cross members from underneath. No drilling and plenty strong. Did it on my 58 with no problems. Just another way, although not how the factory did it. I used POR 15 top and bottom after all was complete. _________________ 53 Hatch Barndoor

I was considering the tack welding from underneath, but then decided I would mount a laser level on top of the roof, align it along the cross braces, then lay the floors in and draw dotswhere the level is shining on it (has to be straight above it), then drill it and plug weld it. its going to take forever, but so does everything else on these things. I will post pictures of my progress on here as I go. so far the floors are 95% cut out, so just gotta finish that |

IF you have a TIG welder with a spot timer, this is the ultimate tool...

you need a spot timer for it to work right...kinda works like a resistance (prong type) spot welder, so it uses no filler metal BUT you only need access to one side.... |
What can you expect to pay for one of these ? _________________

the water cooled version is about $385 accessory kit about $50
I think the gas cooled unit is around $300?
gas cooled obviously lower duty cycle but will never be used at max capacity on sheetmetal, so you should be able to go all day!
you can get them through Indiana Oxygen online, but It is special order only. _________________ DON'T SHIT WHERE YOU EAT! |

I have one of those, but I could never get it to work worth a darn. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but it pretty much sucks. |

Looks like you still must hold the ground electrode opposite the gun electrode. I'd think that you would need lots of pressing to do it up right. |

What type of metal glue were you guys refering to? It would be a huge help for my battery tray along the outside wheel well paint side so I don't have to repaint it. _________________ -Kevin |

Use as directed, I wouldn't use this on a floor but for that Batt. tray may be the ticket. I'll be using this on my bus when I put on the new Qtr. panel where it meets the outer wheel house. _________________ Mark |

Thats the way i'm going to do mine. Might not be what was original, but it sure will be neat, strong, and less work. The edges I'll probably plug weld. Have to see once i get into it.. |

I have that one. Works good but it sure is heavy. It gets hotter than Hades. You have to keep the electrodes filed flat and adjusted for pressure and proximity but I think that applies for all spot welders. |

I have found that if you have a good enough MIG welder (powerful enough) you can crank the heat up with a slower wire speed...this will burn right through the cargo floor and into the tophats/I beams and the slow feed of wire will add just enough rod to make a nice little flush puddle.
PLEASE practice this on scrap metal first, it takes very fine adjustment to get this technique right...BUT it will save you hours of drilling holes. Spend a couple short evenings on your knees with a MIG torch and youre done. |
thanks man I going to practice thes _________________ sorry for the spelling |
