Okay guys and gals, I have a 70 pop top, I have a speaker box with a couple of 12" woofers and a couple of amps hooked up. The issue I'm having is lose of power after running the stereo during the ride. The amps are about 100 watts. Does anyone know how to hook up an extra battery or a better solution. Thanks. |

Upgrade to an alternator then.
Or learn to turn down the volume. Adding a second battery isnt going to fix the problem. _________________ 1968 westy weekender

Ditto, too much amperage being used, and the generator cannot keep up. Purchase, at least, a 55 Amp alternator, though it might behoove you to check your amp draw. _________________ "Two things are infinite: The universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe." Albert Einstein

When the bus is running any battery will be a load on the system and would make the problem worst. _________________ 76 Bay - 2056 Type four |

or a better solution |
There are two really good solutions that work well in a VW bus. They are:
1) turn the stereo down
or
2) If you want to be a bad a$$ deaf person buy an Escalante. I hear they are cheap these days. _________________ George Carlin:

Turning down the volume wouldn't be as much fun as going louder! But what is the escalante you speak of? |

Just guessing he meant "Escalade" (gas-guzzling Cadillac-ized Chevy Tahoe or Suburban). I hear Tiger Woods will give you a good deal on his short version with flow-thru ventilation. _________________ Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.

You might want to put more batteries in it. Since you won't be listening for any wierd or unusual engine sounds you'll at least have your speaks to pass the time if you are broken down on the side of the road. _________________ 71 Superbug

The engine is mechanical sound, so that isn't an issue. The only solution I was dealing with was optimizing the stereo. Thanks for the posts that dealt with that and that only. |

And once you get adequate power generated with an Alternator upgrade. Invest in an Auxiliary battery/kit as well http://www.busdepot.com/details.jsp?partnumber=1738
. So you don't get stranded after turning it up to 11 while parked. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WwoM5fLITfk _________________

I hear if you put one facing forward that pulls and one facing backwards that pushes you don't even need an engine. Have you considered mounting a honda generator and getting around that way. You could even get a small Ingersol Rand trailer generator and tow it around while it powers the speakers.
Really - don't you think your question is a little absurd. If the alternator in your bus, one that has worked well for everyone else for what now - 40 years - can't give you enough power for your stereo that maybe it's you who needs help and not the alternator? Do you think the people in the car next to you want to listen to your music? One day some who has had a bad day will hear that music next to you at a light and then only he and God will know what your last words really were. _________________ George Carlin:

Gus - can you imagine if yours will blow eardrums out what the original author of this thread is thinking? It has nothing to do with sound quality but rather bragging rights. When I was young I had a very powerful stereo in my bus too but never enough that it would even come close to overwhelming a 38 amp generator - and we never bothered others with it. 55amps x 14.5V is is almost 800 watts. 70 amps times 14.5V is over 1000 watts. You could drive sound in a football stadium with that. _________________ George Carlin:

Is this going to turn into one of those angry Samba threads? If so. I'll stop back more often! Meantime, I just gotta laugh when I read these 'modifications' threads (more stereo!, bus higher!, bus lower!, bus faster! and on and on and on..). I'm looking forward to the day when I actually have my technical issues worked out AND I actually get to drive my bus. On that day, I'll be motoring slow, at stock height with the 4-cyl symphony playing in the background. _________________ Endeavor to persevere.
