Type-3 breather disassembly?

How can I remove this cylinder to access the nut?I have tried and have not been able to in any way

Your arrow is pointing to the "special washer" (looks like a thimble or a tube with a thru hole in it). That you might try using a large tap to pull it out. Once it's out, then you can use the socket that most VW places sell, or a 1 inch internal pipe wrench to get the "breather gland nut" out.
