What's the current best boots you can buy? I redid mine 2 years and 200 miles ago and noticed they're all cracked up now. It's extremely disappointing and I want this to be the last time I touch them for quite awhile.

I've heard that Rockford boots are really good. Mine were original and still in great shape, so I cleaned and re-used them. I don't know if it is true, but I have heard that putting the clamp on the boot on the narrow axle side will drastically shorten the life of the boot by not letting it ride and float on the axle. The stress is then taken up by the rubber. My bus and my Passat were both unclamped and the boots just won't die. One of my old mechanics swears that you should never clamp the boot to the axle.

I re-assembled my axles based on Ratwell's principles, even though I have the older Lobros. However, you can find other authorities on this topic who suggest to assemble everything but the outer ring 180* opposite of what Ratwell has shown. Goodness knows what the truth is. I think, based on some reading that I have done, that it doesn't matter too much with a bus which way you assemble the inners, as the bus suspension doesn't travel far enough to make it an issue, as long as big matches small on the inner and outer hubs. I found the myriad of conflicting information to be very frustrating, but my joints feel good, and have lots of mobility.

And youll probably go bananas once you get those lots of extra trouble free miles just by switching them so they work in oposite direction of travel. IMHO You can make a good joint out of parts from others, the key other than not having deep pitting or profund dull marks is to pick the best cage you cand find, where the balls still fit nice and snug or at least have almost cero play with the cage, good grease and good boots.
