Get a used and beat up Porsche 901 5 speed and fabricate all the mounts and linkage yourself.

Oh... you'll have to convert your car from swing axle to IRS.

And after all that you have a used and beat up tranny with 5 gears.

Cheap and best dont usually go together. You need to choose 1 or the other

There is no cheap solution to either of your questions.

The only real bolt-in option is a berg 5 speed and 2 + liters of displacement. If you budget about $10K for the two you will be off to a good start. If you want cheaper than that the only other option is to sell your vw and by a used Subaru car.

Why do you want a 5 speed? If it is to "overdrive" the car then that is a whole other can of worms to tackle. You have to have the revs up for the cooling fan to turn fast enough to handle the heat load at a given speed.

I can give you many reasons to have a 5 speed and 2+ liter engine.

$10k is the low end for both.

I'm asking for the OP's intentions. Not saying a 5 speed and a two liter is a bad combo to have.

I have a reason for wanting one too and it's not for doing 75 at 2500 rpm. Mine would be to have close ratio 1 - 4 and 5th would be what I have now in 4th.

There is a rumor floating around that a company is working on having a "Made In China" clone of the Berg 5 speed trans built

It wouldn't surprise me.
If you design a product, then can't keep inventory on the shelf, eventually someone is going to go somewhere else to get it made.

Technically speaking, yes 4th is overdrive at a .89, .88, .82 or whatever ratio you have. By most people's thinking, 3500 rpm at 65mph is geared pretty low. Use the phrase "freeway flyer" instead of overdrive since you want to nit-pick what I said. I think if you read the whole post instead of hanging up on one word, you will get my point.

Just in case I was not clear: You can't just give the car a higher gear with no other mods and expect good results. If that were possible, they would have come from the factory that way.

Ding, ding, ding! And we have a winner!
It would be nice if they just made the kit, that way us trans builders can keep companies like Weddle in business, also control the quality and ratios of the finished product, even the Berg kit needs help( 5th gear clutch hub problems, venting problems ect)

The have a few updates to the oiling and venting issues. Mine used to puke oil when full at high speed runs... that doesn't happen since the updates.

There is no point is talking about what could have been or should have been. If the Berg family would have all worked together and operated their buisness to its maximum potential, they all would be millionaires.

Family's &running a bizz don't usually work out real well.but some do.
I wish my pro street plus was a 5 speed like it was started as,but things change and got in a hurry, shelf stock is always a good thing, and back order is always bad.wonder why that is?And now it sits hear not being used at all for 2 years now,due to it taking almost 3 months longer than it should of,so another trans had to go in after 6 weeks of wearing out my shoes.Sometimes no matter witch way you turn it's the wrong way.

So you're saying that Berg used their customers for R&D? Shocked Rolling Eyes

Guess that makes the practice universal then....

Kind of hard to put a 100,000 miles on a Type 1 tranny to work all the kinks out of it before selling your first one.

While not prefect out of the box, it's certainly better than Microsoft and Apple, that rush products to market.

Mine had 40,000 miles on mine and if it wasn't that the bearings were used when it was built and it had 2 of the spider gears had broken teeth, it wouldn't of been rebuilt.

The gear lube was not a real problem because it only did it for a short time when fresh lube was filled.

Availbility&affordability is the key to keeping a good few of trans shops building&maintaning these 5 speeds. When they become or if they were shelf stock the afordabiltiy would would be better, and that puts more on the street&track. And more guys to work working on them&building them. With that brings on evielution of the parts to make them better & up dated. Just like the china cranks&rods when checked out &assembled correctly there pretty good.I wouldnt have an issue with china made trans of good quality, But would much rather have an american trans, with american shops making the parts in my german car,hmm I think it's german, who knows??hmm come to think of it was mr porsche german??? Are these cars realy german? Is a chevy made in canada or mexiaco, an american car? Click rrrrrrrrr tink oops there go's that can opener again, look out for the worms!!!

I always advise my customers not a Berg 5speed, not because it is a pos, but Berg is entirely too much of a pain to deal with
