Weekend ride report- It ran fine the first couple days then a few miles from camp it started making some noise. It progressed from a light clatter to a more scary scratchy grindy clunky noise. Now with any normal motor I'd stop immediately to investigate, but I pretty much figured the free ride was over with the clunker so I decided to just get it as close to camp as possible before the BANG. Every minute I cringed and my girlfriend prepared for the walk. It made it to camp, loud enough that my friend heard it from inside the motorhome and the friction made it barely idle then stall. When I got out to investigate I found the oil filter had been hit and bent away at the seal letting all the oil out.....DAMNIT! I was mad at myself for assuming the motor was just toast instead of investigating immediately thereby damaging a perfectly well running engine. The little bit of oil left in the filter glistened in the sun from all the metal in it. I spun on a new filter and refilled the oil. After about 20-30 seconds it made pressure, the idle came back up, and the death screech subsided to a light clatter. I strapped in and left camp wide open climbing a nearby hill at full throttle and revved to the moon expecting a possible parts scattering, but no. I pounded it the rest of the day and a little bit the next day and parked it back in the trailer running great. Sad that some people have paid good money for a "proper" motor and get less run time than I've had outa this thing. _________________ I refuse to call a distributor a dizzy--earthquake.

Sucker is plenty loose by now, thus able to survive that.
Like I always say, too loose is better than too tight, especially when trying to get back to camp eh? |

Swapped the Compufire for a Bosch blue and some points I had sitting around, started 1st crank. Took her out for a drive, pulls harder, more RPM, and runs smoother. I think I'll be sticking with points from now on. |

There is more motors like yours at the sanddunes than anyone will ever know, most guys just think theirs is nice. I know a group of guys that dunes together and the guy who builds all their engines has zero measuring tools, doesn't know the deck or compression of any motor. Just slaps end play shimms back in them. HE had me look at one that had blown twice in a row. It has the worng siz eof mains in it. and deck height was less than .030 with stock bottom end. Heads were flycut down in 30cc range. No wonder the first time it blew the side out of cylinder and the second it was deprived of oil. My rough guess is almost 14:1 compression, and he was running pump gas |

I've got an engine in my car that shouldn't be running at all, and yet it keeps going. The oil has that glisten you speak of and has for over a year. I've driven it on 8 hour trips recently and I am starting to thing that these engines can run on hope and blind faith. _________________ Daily Driver: 73 STD Beetle.

Once had an engine that lost the #3 cylinder. A friend saw me as I babied it home. And tells me he has a VW engine, but it’s been outside for 5 years.
The heads and 3 of the cylinders were toast. So I took the 1 good cylinder and my 3 good ones, slapped the motor together and it ran till I sold it years later. |

The season is starting and we went to Ocotillo this weekend. I dragged the clunker out after not seeing it since April or so and it fired right up. My friends still laugh every time I turn the key and it just goes. I didn't do much driving on it, but it went well. Oil pressure is good and it performs pretty damn well. Strong and smooth from idle to scream (no tach). _________________ I refuse to call a distributor a dizzy--earthquake.

You're an inspiration, when I decided to get back into vw's again a few months ago, almost every other thread was advice to new guys, expect to work on these all the time, don't expect reliability...blah blah blah, if you don't do this...boom, it will blow up, now I know you can't do what you're doing to every car and hope for the same results, but I have a lot more confidence now in a proper built motor, and next time I see a motor for sale for a 100 bucks or so, I won't be afraid to buy it just for the experience.
edit;
oh, and this has to be one of the best threads on samba, whats next to keep us entertained?...plastic tires filled with gun powder...ejection seat with parachute _________________ 70 Street Baja http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=566113

Other new toys have had me distracted on other forums. I was in Ocotillo this weekend and the clunker still lives. Going again the first weekend of March. _________________ I refuse to call a distributor a dizzy--earthquake.
