out of curiousity - it appears that you have the roof brackets for the earlier style of westfalia tent but are using the newer style of stand alone tent?? |
I got a repro BBT tent and installed the brackets when the same time as the top. I use the early tent in short camping trips (weekend) and the big top in long trips like this one... _________________ 1967 Split SO-42 Dormobile |

Really enjoyed reading the thread, you did very well!
I am considering fitting a Dormobile roof to my split as I have two children but I was a little bit concerned with the extra height the roof will add as I'm on stock height and my garage isn't the biggest, is there any chance you or anyone else could tell me how much extra height it adds (in the closed position)
Thanks Paul |

Very good, thanks for posting. I am in North West Spain and restoring my UK 67 Devon camper which I have owned and for 24 years. I wont be getting to the dormobile top for a while as I am still finishing the bodywork but your posting will be very helpful. Not many splits in Spain and I suspect only a handfull with dormobile tops. |

I only know of another split bus with dormy top in Spain...
I'll try to measure the extra height this week but expect around 15cm... _________________ 1967 Split SO-42 Dormobile |

Re reading my post and checking all the hard work...
Have to say that it is worth the time and money for sure...
I don't stop enjoying the top day after day...
Here are a couple pics, note the extra weight the westy is actually pulling...

Is a Dormobile suppose to have belly pans for added strength?
I have a 1960 euro kombi that will get the camper treatment and i'm considering options.

Only if you don't want it to flex and start cracking apart at the seams.
I "belly panned" mine within 2 months of installing the top! You can really feel the difference between a bus with pans and one without!
Also "under coated" the hell out of them! _________________ Some people are so busy being clever they don't have time enough to be wise. |

i can fabricate the belly pans in 1 mm sheet metal, with X pressing for added strength but i would make them removable. i think i will weld some nuts on the frame and use 6mm stainless bolts for easy mount/dismount.
now to find a dormobile top... _________________ 1960 1200 model 117 deluxe ragtop

Nothing special, that was how they turned with my hand riveting tool. Some rivets ended with a little nipple coming out, though. _________________ 1967 Split SO-42 Dormobile |

Hi Xavi
What sort of engine/tranny combo are you running in your bus that allows you to haul your family + pull that trailer? Looks like you bus no longer has the RGBs based on its stance |

Hi velvetgreen, yes straight axle and a modest 1600 SP with a Zenith 32NDIx carb on it. I am building a 1776 with some nice work in the heads and a mild cam to pull the trailer better. It is true that when we pull the little trailer, it is a litte tough...
BTW some pics of the bus...

not really...
the bay fridge/sink is very handy as it has more storage (in the sink as I don't use as a sink, and in the bigger upper drawer)... _________________ 1967 Split SO-42 Dormobile |
