Mr UPS brought My Loctite 518 today......

I'll open up the Loctite and the Permatex and see how they compare.

But......
Time is the ultimate test!
I'm thinking of doing one side with Loctite and one side with Permatex.

Loctite says on their product sheets that Loctite 518 is for two hard surfaces. I thought I saw it touted on here for sealing rubber fuel hose connections, etc.

Can someone explain that?

My understanding of the 518 is that it only cures in anaerobic conditions, so if the gap is small enough it'll set up, but not the stuff that is squeezed out whether metal or clamped rubber. I've used it a couple of times to make intake gaskets on saab turbos, worked great! And I read that touting, considered the source, and chose to put a bit of the 518 on my fuel line connections,

But I was told it was developed for NASA! But you know, people get excited about this stuff, a large tube is part of my travel kit.

Guys, I have been doing Westy web stuff since 1998, time have change.
I can't go and check EVERY page I did over the years.

518 is nowhere to be found in my shop since a few years.
BUT, I'm no more working on wasser leaker...

I have ONLY one sealant in the shop since 08. "The Right Stuff"

It stays flexible at any temps, it's sticky like no other product I have tried.
At any temperature (or almost).

BUT, TRS hate oily surface like no other product meaning that it won't stick if a surface is not DEEPLY cleaned before applying this one.

The 518 is STILL a great product and as it's place in some area of the VW water boxer. As for the 51813. I thought it was simply a new number when it was bought by Permatex.

I never had one single failure with TRS in any part of an engine.

That said, part that could need maintenance (removal like valve cover) you can't use TRS, you will swear like hell trying to remove the valve cover if you are putting TRS there.

I seal transmission case, oil pan and even engine case with TRS and they simply never leak.

Once, I had to remove a modified Subi oil pan sealed with TRS, the next day, I feared I did an error. With a soft mallet i had to hit this one so hard that I bent the oil pan badly.

So you do what you want, TRS has a little part of success in my business.

So you do what you want. Me I'm "sticking" with this product.

Ben

Yup, I use TRS too.
I'm sure a thread will be created to find equivalents.

He he.

I'm so open to any good new or equivalent product.

Just been very happy with this one.

As stated by Ben and I agree...
518 for junctions that may need to be serviced,
TRS for mating surfaces you want sealed up for a long time.

Dirko and an interesting video about how to prep 2 metal surface:

Link

That said, Dirko or similar product harden to hard for my taste.

A sealer with too much " filler " will not squeeze out properly to get the metal to metal joint

I prefer (in order):
-TITE-SEAL medium weight
-Silk thread
-Permatex Aviation Form-A-Gasket No. 3
-hondabond HT (3M)
-Yamabond 4 (3M)
-threebond 1211 (3M)

That said, I have use TRS on one of my personal engine case, an Racer ATV 650cc, running it both winter and summer. This engine was modified 3 years ago with no sign of oil anywhere.

Also, TRS is long to cure giving you plenty of time to properly torque your parts.

Only 2 product are tolerated in the Aviation business, the 2 first one.

Great list Benny.
I have all of those at my shop too.
The Honda and Yama products work well and I agree with your top two.

Toyota makes some really nice sealants.
Scott Foss from the original Vanagon list turned me on to them, many, many many moons ago.

Summit Racing supplied a tube of 518 in two days. Cost me $14.95 plus $4.95 for them to put the 50mL tube in a 4"x9"x14" box and ship it to me. Harder for anybody to lose it that way, I guess.

Just to be clear, are you using these products instead of gaskets?

Also, I notice on the Loctite 518 data sheet that the product retains only 60% original strength when exposed to gasoline at 100 hours.

Wonder if there isn't something better for sealing the fuel tank connections/grommets?

Depends upon the grease Wink
Some will dissolve when put in contact with gasoline.

While we are on the topic of sealants, what do you guys suggest using for rubber water hoses where they meet the aluminum on the various water jackets?

Do you mean that?

Or that (look right, you can see where I use to use the 518):

I'm meaning more along the lines of places where the rubber hose slides over a nipple. For instance on the 1.9 water pump the pipe sticking out of the side is made of aluminum and will start to get corrosion on it where it mates with the rubber hose. Is there anything that can be used there to help stop help stop the corrosion?

Example picture.
