I ordered a right wiper from jbugs (I think) and they did not have the left in stock. I was placing it on the car and thought I should place it on the driver side just so I can pass inspection and then switch it back to the correct side. Problem is, the mounting is a different size. Is every one like this or is this just a quick fix by previous owner? I uploaded pics, the smaller one is right side (passenger) and the bigger one is left side. 69 coupe
And has anyone found a place that has these wipers in stock? Both sides or at least left side? I can't find it anywhere. Thanks to this thread, my blades will be coming in this weekend from sierra madre collection |

They should be the same. The one side looks damaged. _________________ Ghia Owner Emeritus |

Well, the side thats bigger doesn't allow the wiper to fit over the top of it. The wiper fits the smaller one with no problem. |

1ghia,
Per what others have told you, the actual shaft that the wiper arm attaches too on the right side is damaged. Either replace it with a new shaft or add metal to it carefully with a mig welder and grind/file to original shape.
Something else is wrong with your left one and you will have to remove the nut/washer/seals on the top side to figure it out. The portion of the threaded tube that the shaft rotates in that appears above the nut (and the cowl area of the car) should be the same on both sides.
The left tube sticks up far enough to enclose almost all of the shaft and that's what's preventing you from attaching an arm to it. It may also be damaged and may even be missing some of its length, but you first have to get the threaded tube adjusted correctly and you do it with a second nut on the tube that's under the hood.
I took my 69's entire wiper assembly out and apart, cleaned it, greased it, added metal to both shaft tips and after I installed it, about 3mm of the threaded tube shows above the nut.
They are now quieter and work much more efficiently than they did before. _________________ portland, or

Beetle arms and blades are shorter than the Type 14's, as the Beetle windshield is a great deal less tall, and more upright.
A KG's left side wiper blade shouldn't overshoot the rubber windscreen seal - that arm either has the wrong bend to it, or is fastened one spline wrong.
The earlier style arms and blades are even harder to find. The arms are similar to the old SWF Type 2 or Porsche 356 arms and bases, but not quite identical. The blades are the same as used on certain models of 356, so NOS prices are ionospheric, maybe even exospheric! _________________ David Ruby

The blades I ordered should be here saturday or Monday. I saw that KGPR had the shafts but I posted in the classifieds as WTB so that maybe I can find someone with the left blade and both shafts, to buy all at once. I will see what I can get. If nothing comes up, I will buy the shafts from KGPR and just keep searching the classifieds for the wiper arm.
mfitzsimor- thanks for the info. I do not know the first thing about welding, so thats out. LOL New ones or used ones are what I am going to go with.
Thanks again for the help. |
