What happened to that cool Scotland sticker on the back window?
I took practically that same pic on the Forth Bridge.

I need small victories at the moment.
After several false starts, I got the throttle cable (actually, this one is a wire, which I like!) adjusted. At one stage I had it at full throttle, with kick down, when the pedal was up! Would have been easier with two people!
The cable is the wrong length, so I don't have the thickened part to clamp on to, and the clamp struggles to hold the wire, so I've got a shonky looking 'wire bent back on itself' scenario. Seems ok though.
Then bolted back the belly pan, put back the heater accordion tubes, adjusted the heater cable properly and fitted the new idle circuit solenoid.
Yay!
Now for the 40 mile round trip to work again!
Fingers most definitely crossed! _________________ 1978 marino yellow Bay Dormobile camper

After setting the timing at full advance and it does not idle correctly. Would lead me to believe there is a problem with the vacuum or the mechanical advance.
The distributor should be lubed every 6K miles.
Lubing the Distributor
The timing really should be checked in three places:
Set at idle
Check Mechanical advance at specified rpm's hoses off and plugged
Check Vacuum advance pulling specified vacuum with a vacuum pump
Check Vacuum retard hose off and plugged
You need to determine which distributor you have by the part number on it and look up the specifications located here.

This is the specs for a Bus & Pickup Late 1976-1978 All States, 1979 Federal * 2000. Note the timing specs located at the bottom.

Note: 0231 168 005 dist originally equipped with Speed Limiting Rotor 04 016 (5400rpm)

Advance/Retard Range:
Vacuum: 8.5-11deg Adv @ 7.9 In. Hg
Centrifugal:
8-13deg @ 1600 rpm,
20.5-24.5 @ 3400 rpm
The other things that can throw off idle is.
A vacuum leak.
If the throttle plates are not adjusted correctly when closed.
Lube your distributor.
Good luck

Thanks Tcash, that's a really useful mine of information!
I have addressed a few of those things, but I would like to give the dist. a service (it's a shame the rebuild kits are gold dust!) and I'll have a good look at what you've posted.
The good news for now is that the Kombi ran really well for the round trip to work. Good power, cruising at 70mph on the major stretch of road with temperatures a good 10degC lower than usual.
I haven't had the chance to carefully run the dual carb tuning procedures again, but I hooked up the AFR to check I wasn't hugely off target, and the numbers are 15 at idle, 13-14 at 50mph on the flat and 13-13.5 at full throttle.
I'm happy that we can set off for the Lakes, and I'll find time to go over the other details soon. _________________ 1978 marino yellow Bay Dormobile camper

I managed to get a few things fixed yesterday for our trip away, after an early finish at work.
The heating hadn't been working great (no surprises there! ) There was hot air coming forward, but despite the distribution controls apparently adjusted right, there was always a lot of hot air being lost into the main cabin from the vent behind the seats. So, I got underneath and blocked off the branch of tubing that goes to that vent with doubled over tin foil, and then adjusted the heat controls at the air boxes to make sure they were giving maximum heat. We'll see how it goes! Summer here usually means leaving the heat on, and adding a bit of fresh air ventilation if you get too warm!
Then I had a look at the fridge. Last time we went away, it wasn't working on 240v. I checked the power supply as far into the fridge and it all seemed ok, so I left it turned on for a couple of hours, and the heating elements seem to be working at the back so I left it on overnight to cool down. Mysterious!
We had also replaced the tent pole that had broken in the high winds last month, so we are just about good to go! _________________ 1978 marino yellow Bay Dormobile camper

Well under way now! We've stopped for a coffee about half an hour away from the campground we're staying in tonight.
The day started poorly. I went to collect the replacement leg for the 'roo bar from the blacksmith, and it turned out he hadn't made it up because he wasn't sure if the angle of the bend was supposed to be 90deg or not. I then had to go to our usual garage, where the rest of the bar is, and measure the other leg!
After we abandoned that, we set off South in the pouring rain. Luckily the newly adjusted heating was able to keep the screen clear of mist, but sadly once the sun came out I realised that I can't completely shut off the heat! So, windows down, fan on and on we go!
It's pretty hilly as we head to the lakes and we did have one stretch where the 'save my bus' dipstick started flashing its temperature warning, so I slowed down a bit and things eventually settled down. I topped up the oil this morning, so I was reassured by that, and the oil pressure gauge that the light wasn't oil pressure related!
Here's a couple of photos from the (very picturesque!) coffee stop!

Wish I had a picture. But we had a old wooden child's potty training toilet, with a lid that Meow used. It was great.
Have a great weekend

I have had the same problem in the Sahara, so I decide to change something - so now we have T3 heater control pods with rubber flaps - the testdrive to Persia (13.000 km - Berlin, Austria, Hungary, Serbia, Macedonia, Greece, Turkey, Iran.. and back) was successful
left new NOS T3 - right simple T2 repro:

Well, there is the world's biggest internet black spot in the English Lake District, so I was able to kick back and relax without checking Facebook and Samba every day!
It does mean that I'll have a couple of pic heavy posts to update the thread, so apologies for your download times!
We arrived Friday evening at our little campsite near Ambleside on Lake Windermere. It was so cold that we could hardly believe it was late June! Cars of friends arrived from all directions until there were twelve of us, including kids. The biting midges were out in force, but it didn't dampen our spirits and we all sat up chatting outside until it got dark (about 11.15pm! )

I checked back after some months for some more bus+cat pics and I´m not disappointed In fact I bought an ´68 bay in the meantimeso I hoe we´ll do some light travelling with our 7 years old cat. He handles several hours long car transport very well but we will see for overnight trips. _________________

Good luck with that! As you can see, the cat thinks it's in heaven!
On a more disappointing note, I was speaking to the farmer who lets us use space in his shed for storing the Kombi. He's negotiating with a microbrewery for them to use all of the space in the shed, so there might not be any room for us from September!
I've been keeping an eye out for workshop/ storage space in the local area, but there's nothing on offer. Maybe I'll have to build a double garage in the garden? Any suggestions for what construction type stays driest, with least condensation, in a temperate/ rainy climate near the coast?? _________________ 1978 marino yellow Bay Dormobile camper
