What happened to that cool Scotland sticker on the back window?

I took practically that same pic on the Forth Bridge. Cool

Thanks Tcash. I could probably recite Anskeptics adjustment procedure in my sleep by now!
I think there were two issues, the idle cutoff solenoid was bent and only working intermittently, I have a replacement now.
Interestingly, although Colin's procedure for carb adjustment is superb, what fixed the timing was setting the timing at idle, instead of at full advance. (Small difference, but made a big difference!)

I 'de cluttered' the rear windscreen, trust you to spot it! I'm going to swap the Scotland sticker for an age appropriate 'Atomkraft, Nein Danke!' Sticker that I found on the Internet! When I was growing up in Germany, just about every car had one!
Matches the Kombi too! Cool

I need small victories at the moment.
After several false starts, I got the throttle cable (actually, this one is a wire, which I like!) adjusted. At one stage I had it at full throttle, with kick down, when the pedal was up! Embarassed Would have been easier with two people!
The cable is the wrong length, so I don't have the thickened part to clamp on to, and the clamp struggles to hold the wire, so I've got a shonky looking 'wire bent back on itself' scenario. Seems ok though. Shocked
Then bolted back the belly pan, put back the heater accordion tubes, adjusted the heater cable properly and fitted the new idle circuit solenoid.
Yay! Confused

Now for the 40 mile round trip to work again!
Fingers most definitely crossed! Rolling Eyes

After setting the timing at full advance and it does not idle correctly. Would lead me to believe there is a problem with the vacuum or the mechanical advance.
The distributor should be lubed every 6K miles.
Lubing the Distributor

The timing really should be checked in three places:
Set at idle
Check Mechanical advance at specified rpm's hoses off and plugged
Check Vacuum advance pulling specified vacuum with a vacuum pump
Check Vacuum retard hose off and plugged

You need to determine which distributor you have by the part number on it and look up the specifications located here.
http://www.oldvolkshome.com/ignition.htm

This is the specs for a Bus & Pickup Late 1976-1978 All States, 1979 Federal * 2000. Note the timing specs located at the bottom.

Note: This Distributor also fits Type 4 (412) 1974
Distributor: VW 021-905-205P, Bosch 0231 168 005 > 022-905-205S, 0231 170 093
Note: 0231 170 093 dist primarily used on California Late 1976-1978 and all Federal 1979 Models
Can Use:
Points: 01 011
Condensor: 02 074
Rotor: 04 033
Note: 0231 168 005 dist originally equipped with Speed Limiting Rotor 04 016 (5400rpm)
Dust Cover: 039-905-241, Bosch 1230 500 139 > 1230 500 147
Cap: 03 010
Distributor Cap Clip: 034-905-265, Bosch 1231 251 033
Parts Kit (Shims, Washers & Hardware): 059-998-211, Bosch 1237 010 007
Coil: 00 012
Vacuum Can: 07 060
Ignition Wires: 09 171
Spark Plug: W8CC

Timing specs.
Timing Set At:
7.5deg BTDC
@ 850-950 rpm (Man Trans), 900-1000 rpm (Auto Trans) w/strobe, vacuum hose connected
Advance/Retard Range:
Vacuum: 8.5-11deg Adv @ 7.9 In. Hg

Centrifugal:
8-13deg @ 1600 rpm,
20.5-24.5 @ 3400 rpm

The other things that can throw off idle is.
A vacuum leak.
If the throttle plates are not adjusted correctly when closed.

Lube your distributor.
Good luck

Thanks Tcash, that's a really useful mine of information!
I have addressed a few of those things, but I would like to give the dist. a service (it's a shame the rebuild kits are gold dust!) and I'll have a good look at what you've posted.

The good news for now is that the Kombi ran really well for the round trip to work. Good power, cruising at 70mph on the major stretch of road with temperatures a good 10degC lower than usual.
I haven't had the chance to carefully run the dual carb tuning procedures again, but I hooked up the AFR to check I wasn't hugely off target, and the numbers are 15 at idle, 13-14 at 50mph on the flat and 13-13.5 at full throttle.

I'm happy that we can set off for the Lakes, and I'll find time to go over the other details soon.

I managed to get a few things fixed yesterday for our trip away, after an early finish at work.
The heating hadn't been working great (no surprises there! Very Happy ) There was hot air coming forward, but despite the distribution controls apparently adjusted right, there was always a lot of hot air being lost into the main cabin from the vent behind the seats. So, I got underneath and blocked off the branch of tubing that goes to that vent with doubled over tin foil, and then adjusted the heat controls at the air boxes to make sure they were giving maximum heat. We'll see how it goes! Summer here usually means leaving the heat on, and adding a bit of fresh air ventilation if you get too warm! Rolling Eyes
Then I had a look at the fridge. Last time we went away, it wasn't working on 240v. I checked the power supply as far into the fridge and it all seemed ok, so I left it turned on for a couple of hours, and the heating elements seem to be working at the back so I left it on overnight to cool down. Mysterious!
We had also replaced the tent pole that had broken in the high winds last month, so we are just about good to go!

Just about ready to set off now!
Loaded up the Kombi, tent and chairs on the roof rack, spare wheel on the floor as the roo bars are being fixed, and cat food and litter stuffed in there as well!
175 miles and we'll be there!
Very Happy Cool

Well under way now! We've stopped for a coffee about half an hour away from the campground we're staying in tonight.
The day started poorly. I went to collect the replacement leg for the 'roo bar from the blacksmith, and it turned out he hadn't made it up because he wasn't sure if the angle of the bend was supposed to be 90deg or not. I then had to go to our usual garage, where the rest of the bar is, and measure the other leg! Rolling Eyes
After we abandoned that, we set off South in the pouring rain. Luckily the newly adjusted heating was able to keep the screen clear of mist, but sadly once the sun came out I realised that I can't completely shut off the heat! Shocked Embarassed So, windows down, fan on and on we go!
It's pretty hilly as we head to the lakes and we did have one stretch where the 'save my bus' dipstick started flashing its temperature warning, so I slowed down a bit and things eventually settled down. I topped up the oil this morning, so I was reassured by that, and the oil pressure gauge that the light wasn't oil pressure related!
Here's a couple of photos from the (very picturesque!) coffee stop!

I have had the same problem in the Sahara, so I decide to change something - so now we have T3 heater control pods with rubber flaps - the testdrive to Persia (13.000 km - Berlin, Austria, Hungary, Serbia, Macedonia, Greece, Turkey, Iran.. and back) was successful Wink

left new NOS T3 - right simple T2 repro:

Very stylish! I'm just glad Medo uses the litter tray we have!

Rsbadura, if you know of a place where I can get hold of NOS type 3 parts I'll gladly swap over! Shocked

Fortunately, I know what the problem is: when I redid the cables and controls last year, I changed over the 'distribution' and 'heat' controls (back to the stock orientation!), and I'd forgotten that, so the lever was in the wrong position when I adjusted the cable! Embarassed

Well, there is the world's biggest internet black spot in the English Lake District, so I was able to kick back and relax without checking Facebook and Samba every day!
It does mean that I'll have a couple of pic heavy posts to update the thread, so apologies for your download times! Shocked Wink

We arrived Friday evening at our little campsite near Ambleside on Lake Windermere. It was so cold that we could hardly believe it was late June! Cars of friends arrived from all directions until there were twelve of us, including kids. The biting midges were out in force, but it didn't dampen our spirits and we all sat up chatting outside until it got dark (about 11.15pm! Very Happy )

The next day dawned bright and clear and turned into what we would describe as 'a scorcher!' (ie somewhere in the mid 70's F! Cool )
Some pics of the comfy living setup we have inside the Kombi, the stunning Lake District scenery (there is a Karmann Ghia tee shirt in shot, but the photo might not stay in the gallery! Wink )
The weather closed in later in the day, and we ended up with a couple of inches of 'liquid sunshine'! The bonus was that I got a pic of a fading rainbow behind the Kombi.

Sunday lived up to the textbook British weather forecast, 'sunshine and showers!'
We decided not to cook breakfast in the pouring rain, and went to the cafe at a local museum. Then we got lost on the winding, narrow roads of the Lake District, adding a couple of hours to our journey back to Scotland!
Did get home in time to give the Kombi a long overdue wash, dry out the tent and put the Kombi back safely in the local farmer's shed.

Good luck with that! As you can see, the cat thinks it's in heaven!

On a more disappointing note, I was speaking to the farmer who lets us use space in his shed for storing the Kombi. He's negotiating with a microbrewery for them to use all of the space in the shed, so there might not be any room for us from September! Sad
I've been keeping an eye out for workshop/ storage space in the local area, but there's nothing on offer. Maybe I'll have to build a double garage in the garden? Any suggestions for what construction type stays driest, with least condensation, in a temperate/ rainy climate near the coast??

Thought I would share with you all what arrived in the post today!
A pair of unused, old stock PDSIT 2/3 carbs. Apparently suitable for the Type 4 engine in the Kombi, still with the plugs and caps on! Very Happy Shocked

That is all!
