|
|
a few months back I came to my bus from work and found my outer slider handle on the ground.
It appears to have broken off. Looking at my Bentley manual wasnt that helpful because it shows the earlier bay models.
I can see where the handle goes into the hole in the door etc., I can see the screw in the handle and what looks like a spring (where the handle would be interested through)in the latch assembly. But is there something missing that would the handle in place?
I didnt want to force it, or experimentally try to just get the handle in through that spring, if that spring-like part is bad (my main fear putting a huge scratch on the paint) .
Basically? how do I fix this or whats the steps to replace the handle/latch?

I apologize in advance for what is probably a stupid question. I've been puttering with it on my days off between yard work and kid duties... .
Thanks for any help/input.

I can insert the handle, but, it just pulls right back out. There has to be a missing washer or grommet that would hold the handle in place...right? _________________ '76 L20A marino yellow Westy |

Something's worn off or missing, how does what you have match up with #35, #36, #39A and #49 here?

thanks for input busdaddy!
#35, #36, #39A and #49 are all there. When I found the handle on the ground, all of the parts (#35, #36, #39A and #49) were attached and together.
I was able to slide the handle as found (all parts together) into the opening door, but it pulls right out.
I then unscrewed 36 and 35 from 39A, 49 and 34A (handle), inserted handle through hole and through latch, then screwed 36/35 into 39A, 49 and 34A. Same result- pulls right out.
the spring inside the latch was misaligned(2nd pic down) and that may be a factor, but, how so , is still a question...
I wonder if the washer (#35) is the wrong size. That wouldnt explain why it just pulled out after 8 years though...
also #49 for me is the plastic grommet that was used when it was painted etc. in 2008 _________________ '76 L20A marino yellow Westy |

In gallery as 1978 lock. Handle should slide thru it and be held in by plastic handle on other side. It looks like the silder lock mechanism is broken on yours. The handle should come out of the piece it is in. That piece belongs in the door mechanism, Maybe someone tried to pull the door handle to open the bus while you were gone and broke it.

While you have this all out and apart is a good opportunity to replace the grommet around the lock cylinder, too!
That's $42 in the drawing posted above. I forget where I gone one, but they are available as repro, I think. Maybe Wolfsburg West or West Coast Metric...? _________________ John
