I just use a plain white lithium grease for most things like that. _________________ 89 Westy 2.1 Auto |

I used a green wheel bearing grease intended for boat trailer axles _________________ Casey--

any grease will be fine
Personally, I use a food grade certified bio-dynamic grease that is sustainably harvested deep in the natural wilderness from jojoba trees by indigenous women on the Islet of Langerhans. Each tube of grease is from a single carefully maintained tree. My grease is from a tree named Larry. |

I previously used white lithium grease in my regulators, but found that it lost its adhesion when subjected to water + time _________________ Casey--

My Dad (born 1917) was a huge White Lithium Grease fan!
He kept a tub with a hole in the lid with an acid brush in it. EVERYTHING got a smear of White Grease!
Even as a teen, I didn't care for the stuff and rarely used it...... I often opted for other more "modern" lubricants.
I keep a tube around..... Because of the Memories of my Dad, but rarely if ever use it.
I used a red wheel bearing grease, resists washout, flows at low temps and can withstand 540*!!
It should work I think...... and if it doesn't? I'll pull it out, clean it and have another go at it!
I figure that whatever I use is far superior to the hardened 1980's era wax I just removed!
Hmmmm.... That 1980`s era wax was probably one of my more "modern" lubricants?

modern???
by cracky young feller, let me tell ya what we done did when a wagon needed grease coming over heah
we'd just pull over to a bubblin' spring of crude oil and tar in Why-oming, and mix that with the real fine gumbo mud they had all over the place
then we'd slather that onto the wood hub and continue on down the Oregon Trail
also good for the dysentery |

Not many lubricants better than a bit of humor. And, this was some pretty good humor in my opinion.

I'm going to give Super Lube a try. Seems like white lithium grease is a popular choice, but it seems to get sticky and harden over time in my experience. _________________ '84 Westy - 2.2wbx, GT Torque-Biasing Differential

Which super lube? Last I checked they produced a lot of lubricants with the name super lube on the tube.
I personally was planning on using either wheel bearing grease or dielectric grease (dielectric from super lube since I have a whole tube of that). _________________ 1981 VW Vangagon TDI (in progress)

Agree that white lithium grease tends to cake up over far too little time.
My latest favorite is Lucas Red 'n Tacky - it comes in a gun tube and also in handy spray format - it is quite tacky, as the name implies, so tends to stay in place, but also remains sufficiently soft in the cold. You don't need much at all in that application, but you do want to clean out the old crud fairly well before greasing.
While I have been using it for a few years, I don't have enough of a long view of how it stands up over time. So far it seems to be perfect wherever I've used it (including window regulators).
It is also relatively neutral in smell. Some wheel bearing greases have quite a sulfur stink, which you want to avoid anywhere "in cabin", and the doors' innards aren't really sealed off from the inside of the vehicle. This is also one of the advantages of white lithium (low odor).

Super Lube multi-purpose synthetic grease with syncolon (PTFE). It’s in a 85g/3 oz tube. It’s actually the only one I’ve ever seen other than the spray can version. _________________ '84 Westy - 2.2wbx, GT Torque-Biasing Differential

Yeah, I’ve only seen that one, but was surprised that they had many more on the website. But in the 3oz/85g tube size, there are only few choices. There seems to be two that Ace Hardware carries, but not all stores have both.
They have one listed as for O-Rings which is supposed to help condition and seal O-rings and be compatible with plastics & rubber and the Multi-purpose one, which is the more common one.
It sounds like the standard multipurpose version is likely OK for most plastics, but not ideal for all rubber compounds.
The O-Ring version was US$30 vs $15 for the standard multi-purpose.
Up to you if it is worth the extra money. I might buy a tube to use on new door seals, etc. After all, I spent almost that much on muffins for the family and an ice coffee. _________________ John - 86 Wolfsburg Westfalia "Weekender"
