So, recently I had an issue with my sliding door not closing, and the lock was inoperable. I gave it a cursory glance, determined I needed to research the mechanism some, and puttered around with a couple other things needing attention.
I did a search of the samba, and eventually posted in the stupid questions thread, as my exact problem wasn't addressed in any thread I could find. TCash posted this link https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=7302715#7302715 there, and it was very much appreciated, and should be viewed for anyone having issues with their sliding door. This didn't address my exact issue, so I thought I would try my hand at articulating it, perhaps saving someone else a touch of frustration and maybe some cash.

It seemed the lock had somehow(by "somehow" I mean most likely the work of our 4 year old twins) slid into the locked position when the door was in the open position. I inadvertently fixed it before I could snap a photo. It seems a rivet (labeled the Culprit in the pics) became wore enough to have a hair of play in it. This allowed the lock cam to slip by it and effectively lock the door open. The result was the deadbolt in the front of the door was always out, and in this position would not allow the main slide to return to the closed position. The ultimate fix happened quite by accident when I was turning the mechanism in my hands to better understand the way it worked. It seemed a bit of pressure on the main slide brought the wear spot back into the position to allow the lock cam by it again. After I confirmed operation, I pressed rivet a little the remove the play, confirmed operation again, then put it back together. Works like a charm now.

Cheers!
