Long time reader and first time posting- looking for some information. Restoring a ‘64, numbers matching car. Looking closely at the generator pulley when I got the car, I noticed painted numbers. All odd, 1-35 some are very visible. Can anyone share what these are for? I’ve never come across this before in pictures and not seen these on another. They look original.
( i hope there is enough resolution ) I don’t plan to paint the pulley or clean it...don’t want to risk removing them!

Would you post a good close up of that pulley as straight on as possible?
Our DEC62 built single cab had those markings, but since have faded away over the last three decades. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Pre-1968 should be Saxomat, not Auto-Stick. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

And if you go down into vwfreek61's signature line and click on where it says "1964 Bug with Saxomat", you can read all about the car.

I'll get a close up when it warms up, might be a couple weeks. _________________ Kenneth

Looks to me like 1,3,5... to 31,33,35. This corresponds to degree markings if each is multiplied by 10. Not sure why. _________________ 1971 1302LS Convertible (RHD) owned since '74

Moved from the Ghia zone.
Here is a photo of a 40hp generator rear pulley half. It's from a 1962 Ghia engine which from all appearances it seems to be a relatively unmolested July 1962 motor.

OK, this is totally speculation and faded memories but I seem to recall reading that VW balanced the generator/fan/pulley assembly by adding weight to the outside pulley half, like the weight shown in my photo above. I don't see how that much weight on such a small diameter pulley would be an effective balancing mechanism but maybe those fans were really close to being balanced and it only took a little but of weight to make them run smoothly. I'm not sure how the numbers would work into that but maybe John Moxon's Judson rotor balancing theory would fit into this. |

Also found these numbers on the generator pulles.
I read 27 29 31 33 35
Still a question for what these are standing for |
