I'm not sure I understand your question. You say you are getting rid of the bumperetts, which I assume you mean the overriders/bumper guards. If that is what you intend to do than as far as I can tell there is no purpose for the support, plus without the overrider in place there wouldn't be a housing (inside of overrider) for the top of the support to sit within. Maybe I'm just missing something in your question |
I might be using the wrong terms 
Checking out the JBugs online catalog they are called T bar bumpers;
I’m removing the T bar bumpers and replacing them with the US style bumpers. Hope that makes more sense now. |
OK, now I understand.
With regard to your question "how critical is it to have the Rear override supports installed?" the answer depends on whether you are also planning to install the towel bars or not.
If you are planning to just install the bumper blades without overriders and towel bars than I can't think of a reason you would need to install the supports.
if you are planning to install the overriders without the towel bars you probably don't need to install the supports. Just keep in mind that the towel bar holes in the overrider would be showing unless you come up with a way to fill them in with some kind of chrome cap or whatever.
If you are planning to install the overriders with the towel bars than if it were me I would install the supports. Otherwise you will need to come up with a solution for holding the towel bars in place inside the overrider housing (one way would be to cut the top of the support off and use it to hold the towel bars in place). Plus I would be concerned that without the support the overriders plus towel bars could cause the bumper blades to flex when underway due to movement of the top of the overrider/towel bars.
Before deciding what to do you might check if the brace for the support bar located on the back side of the apron is there. if the brace is there it should be fairly easy to locate the original hole in the apron and drill it back out. One hint for drilling a painted surface is to cover the painted surface with painting tape to help minimize chipping in the paint.
If you need a picture of the brace on the backside of the apron let me know and I can take a picture of the brace on my wife's 69 KG tomorrow and post if for you to see. |

Appreciate the input and your tip on drilling into paint is a great idea. Looks like I’ll be poking around under the Ghia and get those holes re-opened. I do see the brackets you mentioned so that’s a bit of good news. |

Thought I would post an AAR and announce that the bumpers are on and make the car look a lot better than those T bumpers.
Really happy with the look and I think they line up really well.

Yes. The rear pair are the same and the front pair don’t have the large hole on the top since there is no reinforcement to pass through them.
