I have done some searches, but cant seem to find what I need. I have an unknown 002 that I need to ID as an early or late. I talked to the guys as Weddle and I THINK i have a late model.

I am specifically considering getting a new 2nd and 3rd gear on the pinion shaft. I see one was pressed on for 3rd, and the other welded. Also was told that the early had a key and the later was splined? Mine is splined, but then weddle said if it was one of theirs it was a wholly different size? Pretty sure its not theirs, but I am new and still learning these VW's. Case stamp says CA071 3799 but cant find anything by searching.

The other little question I had was... The clutch gear on the pinion would slide back and forth. But when not engaged the gears would not free spin. So, I got down to biz getting them apart and cleaned up. The bearing faces did have some corrosion on them. I was able to wire wheel them pretty good and the pitting is minor. Is it bad mojo to try and reuse them? The gears appear to be in great shape (even the synchros). I do plan on replacing the bearings, but just not sure about the surfaces having very minimal pitting.

So... Break down..

1: Need to ID if early or late

2: Minor pitting that cleaned up with new needle bearings a go or not?

Sorry, mine seems to look like this, but all signs seems to be late models in the internals. Now I am really confused. What do you mean by mounting tabs?

don't assume someone hasn't changed things already. How many ribs? Does it have the upper mount points? CA is on the lists below if you look. Took 10 seconds to find the TCash thread in a search here on thesamba. Make sure you have the correct radio button selected in a search here.

Sorry, I swear I did look, but am new to the site and getting my footing. I appreciate the post. As for the ribs it is 3, I just am not sure the reference to the "mount points". Can you clarify the "upper mount points" It does have a hole at the top of the case.

Yes mounting holes on the top of the case. One right above the starter and the second further over.

So, if I have the early model case and a splined pinion shaft without a key, should I assume someone swapped out the guts? Or were there early ones that would have had the later splined pinion shaft.
