Hi!
I'd like to source a 65 interior mirror. I've learnt they are one year only, but have not seen any good pics. Searches on the forum showed several topics on this but none with pics (or live links).
Was it the same as the convertible - one of which is on sale for $$$$

Thanks!

It looks like there is a 65-66 Ghia visor mirror and it is not convertible specific (according to the KGPR catalog). The beetle convertible used the same mirror base but it has an oval mirror while the Ghia version has a rectangular mirror. The link you posted above is for a Ghia since it has a rectangular mirror (even though it's listed in the beetle classifieds).
Here is one listed in the Ghia classifieds for much less $$$: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=2123994 I don't know they seller, it just looked like the best mirror for the best price.
I see a lot of sellers listing the mirrors as 65-67, but in the KGPR catalog they list a 67 only mirror. I wonder what the difference is? |

I know Convertibles have mirrors with a longer stem. It applies to the 65/66 mirror but I cannot find a photo example other than for the early style mirrors
Edit: correction. It does not apply to 65 and later because of the revised window design in the cabriolet top from MY 65
These photos show the magnitude of the difference..
During my '66 restoration I found mirrors of both length.
Edit:... but might be a mod by someone.

Since the KG has a more sloping windshield, i would expect the longer stem to be more easily accomodated. Perhaps there originally were differences between bug and ghia vert mirrors? I’ve written an article in the post-68 typ 1 stickies that documents differences of the late bug mirrors over the years and vs sImilar looking KG mirrors. Perhaps there were similar differences in the early tears as well. _________________ 1971 1302LS Convertible (RHD) owned since '74

| 58-64 convertible mirrors had the longer stem (so you could see out the rear window with the top up). The redesigned 65-66-67 mirror did not need the longer stem so it fits both coupe and convertible. |

I just sold my '67 which had its original mirror, and have been looking through photos of it. Of course I don't have a single good shot of the mirror!
Here is the best one, where you can see it from outside the car. It has the same base as the 65-66 with the built-in light, but the mirror itself is rounded instead of rectangular, and the backside is black. It is not breakaway, and does not have the night time "mode" (whatever you call that).
Looks exactly the same as that green vert above this post.

The combination of the longer stem and the offset of the mirror let you see over the top / boot or out the rear window. The mirror should be rotated 180* when the top is raised or lowered. The high offset lets you see over the top and the low offset lets you see out the window. My brother had a 66 vert bug and we figured this out as kids in the 80s! _________________ '58 Ghia 2387cc with a Berg / Folts 5 Speed

Ghia Mirrors......
Edited and new information added as our mirror knowledge base increased with each post and photo added......
************
These mirrors are from the start of Production up to the end of 1964. (up to Chassis No. 6 502 399 )
The Sun Visors mount to the rods on either side of the mirror.
The Coupe used the short mirror stem and the Convertible used the long mirror stem.
When the Convertible top is folded down, it is recommended to rotate the mirror head 180° to be able to view over the folded top.
*****************
1965 and 1966 Ghia Coupe and Convertible .....
****************
1967 Ghia Coupe and Convertible ......
Edit: in the parts manual this 67 mirror is listed as the replacement for the 1965 and 1966 mirrors. Visually it is very different with the oval plastic head, but functionally it fits. Conversely, an OG 65 or 66 mirror assembly will fit into a 67 vehicle without Issue.
**************
1968 Ghia Coupe and Convertible without the day/ night feature
This mirror was only on the 68 models in the USA. It appears that In 1969 the day/night feature (M206) became standard in the USA, I do wonder what the rest of the World had installed? Was the day / night an option or standard?

Photos are of my 1969 Coupe...... Ewww!!!

Dave,
Those 68-74 mirrors are actually of multiple types - not all the same. See my note here:

That information would seem to indicate that the same mirror (or at least the same mirror part number) was used for all three of the 1965, 1966 and 1967 model years, yet we know that the 1967 model year used a mirror with the changes as outlined previously here by Era Vulgaris.
... plus, as djkeev pointed out, the addition of a 12V light bulb as well..
Do you suppose that the base part number (143 857 523) may have remained the same, but the revision level suffix was changed (from "B" to "C", perhaps)?
Just for the record, the mirror in my low-ish OG mileage 1967 KG coupe matches those changes outlined by Era Vulgaris right down to the black colored back side (which, as i recall, also has a texture stamped into the metal as opposed to the smooth shiny metal of the previous model years).
I wasn't absolutely certain that it is "original" as many of the original and "correct" interior details (upholstery, 1967-only dash knobs, faux woodgrain dashboard face) have been changed at some point over the past 40+ years,
Thank you, Mr. Vulgaris, for confirming that my mirror does indeed seem to be the correct 1967-only interior rear view mirror part. |
