The boss provides support and a cooling path for the guides, can actually improve flow around the stem, and a modicum of anti-reversal. A clean up can be good, but complete removal is only ever done because it is easier and cheaper to do. _________________ There has only ever been one man who was perfect, and they nailed Him to a cross. |

flow takes the shortest path
thats where airspeed is higher... the guide boss in the intake isnt nowhere near it
plus i think for mark herbert, it was more of retaining the longevity of guides
if u check his set-ups he always ran dual springs
and always had a high rpm set up
plus he prolly drives it like a true daily driver
vs most saying "daily driver" but come out on sundays only _________________ Flow Through a Curved Conduit

IIrc, Gene Berg said that removing all the material didn't improve flow all that much and at least some was needed to support the guides themselves. _________________ On a lifelong mission to prove (much to my wife's dismay) that Immaturity is Forever!! |

Unless you purchase a fully restored vintage vehicle, you should expect there to be issues to be gone through.
I have a 64 sunroof bug for sale. It's not much of a driver, should I change how I list it for sale to go through every little thing that is or could be an issue? No. But to you it's someone else fault that your dad didn't check out the car or didn't know what he was looking at before he bought it. Did he not look the car over before purchasing it? IMHO, if you are buying an old car, it is YOUR responsibility to look it over. Not the seller.
Mark Herbert has done a LOT more for this community than you have, for you to come on here like that was poor taste IMHO. _________________ Eric Allred

That black '61 was nasty. Watching that is what got me wanting to build this striker I've got in the works. _________________ Good things come to those who wait.

Wow! I wasn't trying to start anything by posting on this old thread.....I have seen the vid with him doing donuts in that black 61 and finally did some research on the guy driving it. From what I've seen and from what I know in the world, no matter what you do there's always going to be someone that doesn't like you or how you go about doing things. I liked his write up....you get a sense of a person from how they write and he seemed like he was a happy guy living the life. And he liked what I like. To get as much power out of a motor as you can.
And as far as parroting goes, isnt that what pretty much everybody is, except for the few genius innovators?
Gotta learn from some point. _________________ Good things come to those who wait.

June 9th, 2006.... Has it really been that long?
The VW community lost a huge asset that night. The man told it like it was, and was NOT an internet parrot that seems all too common these days. He was the real deal.

I would guess the more material to support the guide the better, especially when using dual springs.
This must be before the Mexican VW 043 heads that do not have valve guide bosses cast in. |

Just read Mark's write up.....building a fast and reliable VW engine.....good stuff. Easy to see how much he loved these little cars. Something he mentioned in his write up a couple of times......"do not remove the intake guide bosses".....
Why is that? Atomization? _________________ Good things come to those who wait.

Its with great regret that I have only learned of Mark's death this evening. I knew Mark some thirty years ago when Mark was working at Autohaus. Like so many others Mark impacted my life in a positive way. My first car was a bug and I literally only lived a few hundred feet away from Autohaus; So guess where I was every day? I recall doing a little cruising with Mark as well. A year plus later I was in the Army. When I returned from basic training Mark had a bad-ass Datsun 510 for sale and I bought it. Lots of people thought I paid too much. That was one fast 510 and it had a stock short block in it. Mark built it right. In the first week that car almost killed me doing a 1,080 degree spin in Oregon, and I got pulled over on Ft. Lewis for doing 110mph in a 35mh zone. I had allot of fun in that car and it was the first car I ever painted (looked damn good to). I traded it a year later for my first Porsche (914) and I have had, and been racing, Porsches ever since.
RIP and godspeed Mark. You will be missed and remembered always
if anybody is really interested I can probably dig up some old pictures of the 510 sitting out in front of Autohaus when I bought it. |

im speechless.
i knew mark from when i was a kid. jeff intro'd me to the CLF, and then mark, and mike gagen, and john palmer, mike lawless, the list goes on.
mark was always the coolest, and he, jeff and i used to have bad ass discussions as we were always pushing the limit. and he was proud of the waves i made when i brought out the mouse to sac BOR and blew down low 12s on street tires with a 1679. so this is just weird to me, as i spoke of him today, and someone whos been in the loop told me the news, and sent me this link. i still dont know what to say.
my condolences to the family. its been a long time since the accident, but as i said, today for me.
RIP mark. we'll race in another life. dave |

In Memory of Mark Herbert T shirts are available, they are really nice. Here is my Son in one
As COPIED FROM THE CAL_LOOK FORUM :
"The Shirts are done, and I am trying to get them sent out to everyone.
I have a big list of what everyone (on the Forum & emails) have said they would like.
The T-Shirts are going to be $10.00 for Small - Medium - Large - X-Large & $12.00 for XX-Large & XXX-Large.
We will be ordering Kids sizes soon, but it has been requested to manipulate the photo, and take the "Super S--t Box" lettering off the car for the kid's shirts only. So that's what we will do.
If you have posted on Forum (Previous Post) here what you would like, and are out of town, and need them shipped, please email me at [email protected] to give me your full address. I will email you back with the cost.
I also need to know names of alot of the people who have posted. If you don't go by your full name on the Forum, please email me with you first & last names, along with the name you use on the Forum.
All the European people that have emailed me your address - I will get back to you after Thanksgiving, so I can start shipping those to you - Thank you for your patience!
Also - if you posted on here and picked up your shirts at Fontana, please let me know that also, if you get a chance!
I am trying to keep this as organized as possible. I already have about 150 people on my list, so this will take some time. I promise that I will get them out to you as soon as possible. We will order more if we need to.
You can also Paypal the money ([email protected]) into Mike's account - but also remember there is a 3% charge.
PLEASE DO NOT SEND ANY MONEY BEFORE I EMAIL YOU BACK WITH THE TOTAL (SHIRTS & SHIPPING CHARGES).
I really appreciate everyone's help in this.
ALL THE EXTRA MONEY THAT IS MADE ON THESE SHIRTS, WILL BE DONATED TO A CHILDREN'S CHARITY IN MARK'S NAME!
Thank you all sooooo much!
Susy Herbert " |
