Leave the vents as the are until you figure out what the deal is.

I have the DD walk-through with one set of upper left vents.
Just took a good close look at the interior of both sides, no evidence of either side having a repair panel. Seems it came from factory with only left vents, at some point the entire left body panel was replaced in a perfect fashion, or this chassis is cursed.
Hard to see in the galley photo, but both left wheel wells were cut out, and two later flared replacement panels are pop-riveted over the holes.
Manufacture date of October 31, 1958. Original engine number seems to have been 2617666. Chassis number 404913. Halloween, 666, 13...
Maybe this wasn't such a great deal?
My problem now, to restore this panel, no vents? One vent? Two vents?

I think in a post from him in the original thread of this, he stated the wheel arches were pop riveted in repair panels.

Also, I understand that a walk through doesn't have the rear upper vents, this has one set on the left!

It has the later wheel arch on the side with the vents too which suggests its been repaired in that corner with incorrect panels..

Just picked up a 59 double-door walk-through, a carport find!

Manufacture date of Oct 31, 1958. Portland, Oregon point of entry.
M-code
360 175 183
UP 215 GREY 404313

Also, I understand that a walk through doesn't have the rear upper vents, this has one set on the left!

If that badge on the headache rack reads "Travel Equipment Corporation, Elkhart, Indiana" then it is likely a Sportsmobile. The badge on the poptop probably reads the same way.

ok just found this. page 4. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=284810&start=60

so apparently, ALL panels prior to Jan. 17 1958 had the vents (reagrdless whether its a walkthru or not). so this bus doesnt cut it for us. its too early. its not the example we're looking for.

we need to see a walkthru bus WITH upper vents built AFTER jan 17. 1958, and preferably one after oct 58 so we can see an mcode plate.

well i think the fact that this could be a 57 walkthrough is cooler then a 58 walkthrough with upper vents Cool

but thats just me Very Happy

i would love to know the mcodes for this bus. the mcode for a walkthru with vents. are you sure its not a bench seat that was hacked out?

hmm. those are both campers too. interesting....

This was just a Panel and if it was a hack, it was a damn good one. It had the correct '58 walkthru bulkhead. He has since sold the Bus, I can see if he still has some pictures of it. It was a rusty pile though.

The Bus I was talking about is up for sale again.
