Thanks, I think you are on the right track. I just did an experiment... I pulled the seat forward a bit so that the hinge wasn't retracted so far rear ward (this raised the front of the seat a bit and leaned the back rest a little further back. Then, when I raise the seat to allow the spring latch to release upwards, bringing the seat back down allows the peg to rest under the spring latch, without jamming the top part of the latch up against the upper peg.
So what I need to do is add a brace lip underneath the seat which will rest against the front panel, limiting how far back I retract the hinges when pushing back into bench mode. I think one of the photos from the original poster showed something like this.
I think the spring latch is only intended to help push the bed back into a bench, but the final angle and weight distribution is managed by the height of the front panel. That way, it doesn't matter if the peg remains set in the spring latch or not when seated.
Once I get this install finalized, I'll post dimensions in case that helps anyone else doing a Type 3 Vanagon install.
Edit: And in fact, the first page of the instructions show a notch in the side panel into which the seat base slots into to limit its rearward travel. I'll either do a notch, a rear stopping block or a front lip catch. |

Thanks for the reply. My hinges seem well aligned and parallel with no toe in or toe out. Even if I was to change the mounting angle on the side panels for more or less rearward tilt, I don't think this latch behavior would change.
Photo #1: In Bench configuration with seat down, firmly seated in the spring latch after having pushed the bed into a bench.
Photo #2: Seat raised to access storage underneath. When the peg clears the latch, the spring pulls the latch above the height of the peg.
Photo #3: Seat lowered back down, and peg rests below the spring latch. Would not want to sit on the bench like this as the latch may break or jam past the upper peg.
Edit: Here are overall photos of my installation:

I'm almost done with my Rock N Roll bed install in my Country Homes Camper Vanagon. I have a question about the spring latch mechanism, which seems to operate similar to futon couches.
In bed mode, I can lift the bench seat up until the latch catches, and then pushing down, the bench angle is locked and the bench can be set in place. If I over shoot the latch catch, the bench seat can be lowered back down and then lift again to try and catch the latch. This all seems normal.
In bench mode, the bench seat can be lifted up to access the storage underneath. When I do this, the seat overshoots the latch, and then when I lower the seat back down, the seat jams against the spring latch before it can lower all the way down. I have to lift the seat and reach to both sides to pull up the spring latches and get them engaged.
Since this is a vanagon install, I used different dimensions and angles for my hinge install, as compared to a bus. I'm wondering if the geometry of my install is incompatible with how these hinges work. I'm thinking of making up some kind of string/pulley mechanism to pull up both spring latches when trying to reset the seat in bench mode, after having accessed the storage.
A picture would probably help here. It's dark now, but I'll try to post one tomorrow. Has anyone else had issues with the spring latch mechanism with the seat in bench mode?
Thanks,
Travis |

Just wanted to share my build with everyone. I'm very pleased with the result. I ordered my hinges from Just Kampers. I did find that the hinges were frustratingly tight at first so I lubricated them with some white lithium grease. The now move very smoothly.
My seat back measures 57.5x18, the seat bottom measures 57.5x21.
I plug welded down a plate of 20 gauge metal, where the angle iron brackets would be welded into place.
Here's the angle iron bracket welded on the plate with the side frame attached. I used an old bed frame for the angle iron, cut it to fit, and drilled out the holes.
Here's the inside of the side panel, attached to the bracket.
This is a closer look of the top piece. I took a piece of square tubing, cut the angle to match the wheel well, drilled a hole for the bolt to attach. I welded a small plate under the square tube, then welded it into place. Sorry, I didn't photograph it.
I attached the top seat and bottom seat with tee nuts and routed out the tops so they sit flush with the wood. Everything sits level and is flush with the rear deck.
Here's where I checked the seat height to make sure it didn't sloop down too far in the front.
I made a quick stand, over-measured the height, and cut it down in small increments on my table saw, until I was happy with the height. I decided I wanted to make a curved kick panel, so I took a test strip to kerf and get the length measurements.
And the completed seat. The kick panel wraps around the side frames and bolts into place. I added a small frame to the bottom to catch the bottom seat. It adds an extra 2 inches to the seat height and hides the kick panel top. I'll eventually add kerfed pieces on the ends so the lip will wrap to the sides as well.
Here's the seat in the down position. It sits perfectly flush.
A peak at the bottom, when it's in the down position.

Thanks!
I sketched out what the piece would look like on 4X8 Sheets incase someone else needs to visualize it like I do..

i love this thread. I've read it many times in preparation to build it myself. Can anyone post pictures of down in the area between the hinge and the side of the bus? I'm just trying to see where the hinges need to lay in relation to the side. Also, I'd like to see how much space is under the seat and what kind of stuff you guys are storing in there!
THANKS! |
Hinges fold to the outside of the box, hard to get a pic, but I will try and post one. Inside i keep a lot. Spare gas can, tent, camping oven, poles for my canopy, inverter on the driver side. _________________ 63 Double Cab http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=443823&highlight=deanos

just finished my rock n roll bed from the measurments from this thread .
the only diffrence was my front panel could only be 14 1/2 inches high.
as any higher and the base of the seat was at an angle ,other than that all other measurments are the same

Finally got back to it, after a month of dealing with a sprained ankle. Not whining, just saying...lol
Put the bed to the frame today, hand stitched the corners though I am not all that happy with the armrests but I can fix them. Will be installing it later today.

Thanks Dean,
Going to make two side armrests from this part as a template.
First coat of stain.
