Personally looking forward to seeing this car and its state next week in CA. Pete has been churning away at it this year!! _________________ John Henry

The significant metal/grid wear on the right edge of the brake pedal is also intriguing. Makes you wonder, with virtually no wear on the clutch pedal. Just another one of those unique mysteries with these old car histories. |
Probably had a hard time idling. Owner kept the ball of his foot barely on the brake pedal, while goosing the throttle with his heel!
Just a thought. You know. From having had to drive several with limited idle function! _________________ Jimbo

Pedal Cluster cleaned and painted. Brake pedal has countersunk holes drilled on the top. A mount for an extension? Maybe a handbrake connection? Any ideas?

Although it has taken FOREVER to get this far, I couldn't be happier seeing this project. This split standard could not be in better hands to get finished. I'll be flying out to Cali when it is done to get a ride... maybe even a drive!! _________________ John Henry

First, an apology. Haven't posted many progress pics during the restoration. Too many other obligations (family/professional/etc) keep me moving in many directions. Fast forward to some of the latest pics...

Very cool to see this progress! What shop is doing the work? |
We have this '51 with Corey Smith of Smitty's Auto Body in Auburn, CA. (He recently relocated from Meadow Vista, CA. a few miles away.) He's a really good mix of experience, knowledge of VWs, and patience. Glad I was referred to him when I bought this car and brought it to California... _________________ Happy to be alive. I can't even describe how happy these pics make me. I sold this split to Pete 5 years ago now. It has been a long road. We chat pretty much weekly. I am flying out to CA in a few weeks and will visit the shop where this split is. This car could not be in better hands. Pete is an AVID vintage VW enthusiast and this split WILL get completed and WILL get driven. Great progress and kudos to the shop that is doing this incredible work. _________________ John Henry

My apologies for falling off the radar in this thread. Too many distractions, too many projects and not enough time to pull up pics. But...The 11e is getting closer to completion, and it's been an interesting journey. COVID really took its toll on the work being done (I'm sure that's the case with many other project cars). But things are moving ahead now. And the work on this car is top-dog, the attention to detail is incredible. Here are a couple pics of the car, after most of the body work, before and after the final prime. And 2 pics of the decklid and a door with their pearl gray color. I'll post more pics in the near future showing more paint, some smaller details, the upholstery, and the sunroof that makes this such a special VW. Getting excited here as we start to put it all together...
