Thanks for this great article. This is "Complete Volkswagen Book"? Do you have the issue number/year of publishing? Would be great for my records.

Here's the book. It's complete VW book #4 which came out in 1976, wow.
I spiral bound it for easy reading and am showing you the table of contents. Lots of good technical info here. I visited eBay and found about a dozen of these for sale prices all over the map but you usually score for less than 10 bucks. Good luck.

I first became aware of this guy while living in Long Beach Ca. Late 70s, a great place to be then. Anyway VWs were a lot more popular just by shear numbers and magazines were more plentiful, so here's where I caught up with him about 1978? If you read into it he gives you valuable tips to increase longevity and some of meticulous records too. Here's Al.

I checked with my family, and they managed to produce this photo of the burned out car. While it was burning Albert Klein managed to retrieve the log book from the glove compartment.

It would have been interesting to know what else was replaced on the bug over those 1 million miles. He noted engines, transmissions and tires. What about suspension parts, door hinges, seats, etc..

Too bad his logs weren't scanned and saved that showed his detailed maintenance records. Sad

Hello forum,

I'm not actually into cars or VW cars, but I saw this old thread https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=417120 and saw a lot of questions. As Albert Klein was in a relationship (though not married) with my great aunt Inge Kuhl and I did some research on my family, I can shed some light on some of the questions.

"Old Faithful" was totaled in an accident on March 29, 1997. (Source: The Guinness book of world records, 1998) During its lifetime the engine was replaced 6 times. He kept a meticulous of all the work he did on the car.

A lot of arguing with no information.

If anyone knows the location of the Beetle mentioned in the first post, PM EverettB and he will unlock it for an update.

No, the dash has been replaced knobs and all, the MAC truck smash twisted it. However, areas of the original body have been retained contrary to the nonsense that some have posted Very Happy

I DID visit the pre67 site, and there's also some debate about the authenticity of Rattletrap.

With a car having so much replaced, the original version of the vehicle is probably living in some washing machine or Honda. Just like Klein's bug, it was reused and recycled into something new.

You have a car with some amazing history behind it, just not a record. I'm out.

If my posts came off as offensive, I apologize. Just trying to engage in a nice little conversation!

I DID come here to find the whereabouts of Mr Klein's car Evil or Very Mad

If you troubled to visit the pre67vw site address as above, you would see that Mr Klein's car has been a debate within the Rattletrap thread earlier on. I just want to find out for real about this car – is that so wrong that I want to establish Rattletrap's standing Rolling Eyes

Owning Rattletrap was a dream for me since I first saw it in 1977. I feel a little honoured to now have the car all these years later. How can I brag – its all down to Tony Levy's efforts not mine Wink

Your car has NEVER been the world record car.

The biggest joke is Tony Levy's fraudlent mileage record keeping. Anyone who looks carefully at the details of the car will know that the mileage records start a full TWO years before the car was made!

Just for the info of anyone reading this, Tony Levy's Rattletrap is a zwitter, yet the mileage records start in 1950!

And, on top of that, we'll have to deduct the first 5 years of mileage since the car had a chassis swap sometime after 1955!

In the absence of Klein's car, Rattletrap is STILL a record car Exclamation
Rattletrap is a 1950 – it's been well debated and argued for and against on the English site:

http://forums.pre67vw.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=16378

You will not see all images unless you are logged in though

I don't plan on going through all the ins and outs again here. I merely wanted to establish the whereabouts of Klein's car and see evidence of its mileage. You seem to think Mr Levy was capable of falsifying his records whereas Mr Klein could not have possibly done so Evil or Very Mad

It seems to be the case that Klein's car was nothing special and has been scrapped. Wink

If somebody finds Albert Klein's bug and the pan, engine and transmission are repairable, I think I know of at least one Bradley GT body for it. Laughing

Again repeated: Rattletrap is the world record existing Beetle. Even if Klein's car's mileage was correct, at some stage Rattletrap was well ahead with a record mileage before Mr Kleine began driving round-and-round his local ring road to catch up.

Someone needs to find Klein's car…… but they won't 'cos its a gonna, records proof and all, like it never happened Twisted Evil

Also I repeat, it would be worth someone's effort in finding Klein's car IF it exists. It would be a very valuable museum item if authentic, but you can't find something that no longer exists Wink

Rattletrap's original owner Tony Levy passed away years ago, it was he who created this world record Volkswagen. I am lucky enough to be Rattletrap's new owner and carer Wink

old Volkswagen best suited for the scrapyard.

That would be a shame. In England we were well aware of our record VW that has now become a world-wide motoring legend and part of our heritage, and have looked after it. If Klein's car is (was) authentic, you guys in the States had a nice piece of motoring history and let it slip through your fingers.

I'd say it would be worth someone's effort in finding Klein's car IF it exists. It would be a very valuable museum item if authentic.

Rattletrap is the world record existing Beetle, and assuming that is that Klein's car had actually covered more miles, and there’s no car or documents around to verify this, otherwise Rattletrap is the world champion outright. Very Happy
