just wondering
on a carb car the gen is just for spark and stuff like lights at night or windshield wipers when it rains
on a F.I. car if its running its using more power than just coil and spark
an alternator and a cap for the amp and ill be Golden!
well ... if i just get off my ass and put them in..... _________________ 74 Mexi Swamp Thing. 70 square volksrod (Swamp Rat)..65 C10

i have the generator out of my 67 that im going to just swap the pully
and turn it around
i have never had a problem putting a single wire lat in a bug
the 66 baja had it
and when i put the T1 in the 67 fasty
Same thing
just taped the wires together
Just have to get to someone that can shave it like its needed
Again... anyone done this conversion with a F.I. engine??? |
I thought dirt sandwich (from Idaho) did it a year or 2 ago on his Square. |
yep I did on my FI 71. worked fine. Maybe I'm naive but why the FI/carb questions?
I swapped it out for a geo metro alt because I like the fit more.
My next T3 I'm going to use a T1/T2 alt flipped 180 degrees. _________________ 71 Squareback

thanks, I have never really seen the workings of an alternator other than having a shop swap pulleys when buying a new one and just bolt on replacement after returning home. |

You pop it off, and put it on the other end. Actually, you'll want to use the T-3 pulley on it, so it'll fit inside the belt housing. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Mike,
Its pretty easy to do. I was able to finish the mod in about 3 hours. Since I used the 75amp unit, it was a lot bigger which required more cutting on both halves of the fan shroud.
All I used was a jig saw with a fine metal cutting blade, drill, rivets and rivet gun, and some sheet metal. |
The OP used a 75 amp alt too, this IS why he had to cut the fan housing. With the 55 amp unit, it fits in the "flipped" position without any cutting. Note; it does need a little grinding to clear the 3-4 side sheet metal.
The only issue with this style of conversion, is no cooling air for the alt, and that shround will forever be a 75 amp t-1 alternator shroud (can't go back to a generator). I don't know IF the 75 amp unit is the same size as the "super 100 amp" unit though. I think they're even larger (the 100 amp unit). _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Thought I would give you guys a update on how my conversion has been working...I drive it all the time and have never had an issue with it...I love being able to drive at night with the headlights bright, in the rain with the wippers going, and be listening to my stereo all at the same time...
