this is pretty strange, outside of marfa a few miles is a prada shoe store, in the middle of nowhere, with no one around. (except for the horse) |

well it has been a while since i made a post. took a little day trip up to marfa texas last weekend, and on my way back i spotted this corvair in the tiny town of valentine...pulled over and took a shot.
gigi did great on the trip...i had taken her up to marfa quite a few years ago when i wasn't as well versed on engines and valve adjustments...i have to say she performed much better on this trip...there are some long steep hills to climb and she kept up at 65 to 70mph no problem, not the case the first time. i did however, have to change my clutch cable...i had the good fortune to have put my original cable in the frunk after swapping it out for the wing nut version. the cable snapped right when i was passing through border patrol check point, so i had a nice spot to make the swap...border patrol was even nice enough to let me wash my hands. needless to say folks, carry a spare! i just ordered the clutch shaft upgrade from classic bug parts...the cable arm hook is replaced by a bearing so the cable and arm won't ever wear out.

Full on summer here in El Paso…I often drive past this unique abandoned house and saw that it was for sale… |

So I pulled the motor again yesterday, I had put in a funky trans shaft seal that I got from auto zone…I was suspicious because it was half the thickness of what I pulled out…nevertheless I put it in and it seemed like a good fit…a little over a year later, there it was leaking…ugh… I had another reason to pull the motor, hopefully someone can shed some light for me on this…I had painstakingly made sure I got the correct endplay on the last build I did, I had bought some thick shims from WW, and installed them, but they were too much, couldn’t crank the motor by hand, so I took one out and replaced it with a thinner one, got a .07 measurement, cranked easy, thought I was set…well going on over a year later I’m hearing a suspicious sound and wondered what it could be…and sure enough I’m feeling excessive endplay at the pulley…as I replaced shaft seal, I put the thicker shim back in replacing the thin one, so now I have all three thick shims back in and I still feel the pulley move…the sound seems to be gone, so maybe I’ve got it fixed…but it seems strange that what wouldn’t work before, works now…I told myself I better not put a fourth shim in…seems like most people in the engine forum say not to do that. Any info from engine builders would greatly appreciated. Getting really good at pulling the motor! Out and in on the same day! |

You're a braver man than I John. What if it were, like mine possibly, the only thing holding the wheel together? 8-[ |

Lovely shot! Absolutely love the simple lines, and the rough paint on yours accentuates the minimalist quality of these early cars. _________________ Air does not freeze. Air does not boil.
