yeah syncro..... difficult on the bank and the head from what I hear. As a general noob to a wrench when I started so was my first vanagon and every one after that. now I am buttoning up my first and hopefully last engine replacement on my AAZ. Habits can be a slippery slope for sure! I never thought I would be this deep in a machine, but the headaches so far have been worth it. Anyway, enjoy your drive, and whatever pot of fun is on the otherside of the rainbow.

Yep, never a dull moment in my life - heh. The simple truth of it is I loved the Vanagon but the Syncro model was more complexity than i needed to have its other cool attributes. Need one...

not sure I get your master plan yet iDoug, but glad youre having fun with cars

so, you sold a syncro, bought an Audi car, and now you want a 2wd Van?

You already have an offroad, camp capable vehicle, and an onroad vehicle.. what niche does a 2wd Van fill?Smile, gift for your son when he goes to college?

I also dont get why you would be driving from PNW, since you dont live there afaik..

but it sounds like youre flying from PNW to Georgia, to drive a van home.. Congratulations, and Post Pictures!

So, still looking good if anyone needs a hand moving either a Vanagon or large parts from the Pacific NW to the FloridaGeorgia border or anywhere in between. I'm leaning more toward driving someone's Vanagon down, then driving mine home though it could be quite an adventure...

Thanks for the hospitality offer! I've had a few Samba folks overnight in our driveway over the years as well - fun way to meet people.

It's an 87 Weekender Wolfsburg automatic. I'm still hemming and hawing trying to convince myself I will get more enjoyment out of a large friendly box on wheels, than this pretty cool Quattro. The Audi is REALLY fun to drive with that engine - just squirts down the road with that wild asymmetric 5 cylinder exhaust note for company.

Welcome back to the herd (though you never really left I think). You listen to Take 5 while you're driving that Quattro? Smile

Some time over the next few months, I am going to be towing an empty trailer to the FL/GA line from close to Spokane, WA. If you are on the East coast and thinking of buying a nonrunner out West, or simply want your Vanagon brought to the East coast, let me know. This might help you out.

I am going out there to pick up a Vanagon and will be bringing it back on the trailer. My schedule is flexible and it will be at least a month or so before I do it and possibly a few months.

So, if you live anywhere out in the Midwest or anywhere on a line roughly between here and there, it may work out. May give some people considering a Vanagon in Seattle/Portland, etc a cheap way to get it. Engines, transmissions a possibility as well. I could be like Santa Claus - stopping and delivering Vanagon parts eastbound across the country.

On the way back westbound, the trailer with the Vanagon might have room for some large parts as well.

DougM

PS - One other possibility would be if you have a drivable Vanagon you want eastbound, I may be able to do that instead. I'd then drive mine home from the FL/GA line.
