The clutch provides the connection between the engine and the transmission. Spring pressure holds the friction disc in place when driving, pressure applied through the throw-out bearing into the diaphragm spring separates the two plates so that you can change gears or stop.

As a North Carolinian, I'm proud that my state is considered such a favored destination. GUAPO, come prepared for rain. I'm afraid the mountains are having the wettest season on record.

That's the right attitude! Very Happy

BTW, the clutch allows the engine and transmission to separate, when the pedal is pressed, so you can start off in first and then change thru the gears.

If the clutch does not function properly then you cannot change gears well or if it slips the engine and trans are not locked together and they will slip relative to each other.

Update...cuz i know you're all at the edge of your seats to find out...LOL.

New clutch, machineflywhe1el, $618 including a $100 discount on the clutch repai kit.
Danny Brow's Automotive ay 8601 Prospect Ave, KC MO. Only one man had a full mouth of teeth and the hubby swore he heard banjo music, but they seem to know their chit and did not gouge a family in need. So they have my appreciation and recommendation.

The Westy seems to cruise easier now. Can someone tell me what the clutch actually does? I was under the impression that all it did was open the tranny in order to change gears.

We have decided not to try and drive straight through, which is good. We're on our way to abig family reunion and our house for the week is already paid for. We can't not go, the Matriarch of the family is getting up in age, almost 90, so the kids need to see Grandma, just in case.

Westy is still drinking oil, but i stopped and got a gallon and a quart bottle and will just keepadding as needed. Hubby says we want to keep and make awesome this Westy. I think he's planning a Subi transplant... Smile

In Kentucky...

Well........ Advice?

Take that darn "schedule" you have that's going to "make" you rush and push thus driving too long........and toss it far far away!

All you are going to do us make the whole car full of people HATE traveling........ And in particular...... Traveling in the Van.

The Joy of the trip is in the journey....... Not the destination.

Relax, play it by ear....... Have some fun, don let this ruin your trip.

That's my Advice anyway. Your kids are growing up and soon will no longer be with you for any extended period of time. Enjoy the short time you still have together as a "young" family.

If you are off to see someone, call them, tell them that you're going to be a tad delayed. Smile

Screw Nags Head........ If you don't have time..... There's always another time, adjust your trip to fit today's situation.
It's just a beach and this time of year....... FULL OF PEOPLE AND CARS!!!!!!

Tennessee, Kentucky....... Beautiful areas, lots to see and do........ Not so crowded........

Dave

no, just a bit upset.

the longer we're here, the more we will end up pushing and driving too long to get to our destination.

an update from the mechanic, there was oil in the clutch area, as well as oil in the tranny. both seals were bad. Flywheel is getting turned now. should be done today, but probably after 3pm.[/b]

A clutch is not a Giant sponge.

It will soak up and hold oil......... But not quarts of it.

No visible oil leaks? It's burning it.
Why?.......
Worn rings, worn valve guides, bad crankcase venting, etc.

My guess is that the clutch is worn out. Down to the rivets with a badly over heated and warped pressure plate. A good shop will machine the flywheel and install a new clutch assembly along with a rear engine seal and front transmission seal.

Clutch disc could have some minor oil issues but probably not.

Figure $300 in QUALITY parts. The rest is labor and supplies.

So, we are towed, delivered to Brown Auotmotive in KC and the driver e en delivered all of us to the Courtyard Marriot in KC.

When i mentioned that the car is drinking oil but not smoking, mechanic said it could be and probably is the rear main seal leaking oil into the clutch and that is whats making it slip. I was not using the clutch on the highway, going 60mph...so why the clutch would suddenly go bad, is the question.
i figure he'll separate the engine and teanny to find an oil covered clutch.
$700 is the estimate, prolly high since we're desparate, but maybe not.

cross your fingers and toes, we'll be spending tomorrow at the hotel pool.
Not a bad way to spend a day. The Cleve Indians aren't in KC right now, or I'd go see them.

what do you all think of that diagnosis?

thanks for the well wishes....

Sounds like clutch problems. First item I'd investigate. Especially with our previous posts about the smell and pre-trip drive issues.

A little late to this thread. We're in Richmond VA just a couple of miles north of I-64, if you get this far and find yourself needing more assistance. Good luck!

Just checked and there is nothing leaking and the engine isn't wet underneath.

What's wrong, why is it doing this and will it happen again? do i just start for home and pray to arrive?

I have AAA but i don't see them towing me back to Denver if something is really bad. I'm just outside Topeka, so i can get it towed there for free. is this a new transmission? does the clutch help me to drive or just open the tranny to change gears?

I'm so sad. can anyone recommend a KC vw repair???

EDIT: called Brown VW in KC and he says it's a burned clutch. what should that cost to fix?
thanks all... Crying or Very sad
