Many thanks for the quick response , thats exactly what I was looking for.. the certificate site I had located was for subscribed members only .
£129 is a lot for a certificate but I think it’s worth it .
Shame that you conformed some numpty had ripped out the bulkhead, guessed as much as it looked looked shoddy for a factory option .. no idea why someone would do this as it is a walkthrough .. maybe for a swivel passenger seat perhaps ? |

Sorry to hijack this thread, but I have a similar issue . And I have searched this forum and others and haven’t really found what I’m looking for .
I’ve recently taken on board a new bus 1972 bay crossover Kombi “ Danbury “ I’ve looked in the places mentioned in these forums for the M Plate. Not that I really need it but it would be nice to confirm original configuration, colour etc .
The bus was renovated in 2007 ( not brilliantly ) and most certainly not in its original colour and I think this is when it lost its Danbury interior.
I’ve noticed including this thread people have managed to get a certificate from VW or look up the m plate using the chassis number . However I can’t find anywhere to online to do this either for ordering a cert or a look up database. So any help would be appreciated.. and any of your insights from the pictures below would be great ..
It looks like maybe at the renovation someone might have hacked off the left hand bulk head behind the seat as I can’t believe it would have been done like this in the factory . Please see pics

I did not fill holes, and they line up -
MTag behind driver (right side)
Other tag (VIN Tag?) behind passenger seat. _________________ -Kevin

sorry, I was so excited at having found them, as I'd been sort thru parts every now and then for the past couple months looking for them. I'd put them in my folded up registration paper.
I meant M-Plate behind driver (left side)
Vin Tag (tag that says Volkswagenwerk AG MAde in Germany, has my vin # along with load ratings 975 and 1200 and total 2175) I assume that is called the vin tag. I also have a vin# on the dash right behind the windshield. Sorry I don't know the proper name of all the tags. |
i think the bare al one goes behind the other seat....did you fill rivit holes? match your holes up to confirm. |

Bad news, good news and a question...
I took the M-Plate and Vin Tag off my bus while it was getting painted. I thought I lost them (bad news).
Just found them yesterday. I was going to reinstall, and want to make sure I put back in the right place. The M-Tag goes behind the driver seat (left side) and the Vin tag goes behind the passenger seat (right side).
This is for a '69 single cab.
thanks. |
you swap terminology half way thru your post.
the M-plate goes behind left seat, drivers seat. I dont know what you mean by m-tag, prob m-plate
and a vin tag? is it long metal plate with vin only? (dash?) bigger plate like M-Plate size, but not the M-plate? a sticker? |

Follow up:
I received my Bus's birth certificate and production data sheet from Volkswagen today. I'm posting it here so that anyone in the future who may have questions about M-codes may use this as a reference from VW.

TR is listed as Transit Reserved, UF is San Francisco and UA is LA.
It was probably port allocated after production. Does it have the Cal House Car tags on the dogleg? |
It does not. However, the original owner had the Bus repainted and I suppose he could have removed the tags at that time?

I believe I will need a little help and will be grateful for it from others who may know what I can't sort out. I expect to take a better photo of my M-code plate when I remove my dash pod, but for now, I put my phone under the dash to get these photos. I believe one must be a part time contortionist to get proper photos of the M-plate this way.
This is my interpretation of my M-plate information:
1. Serial number
2. 227 = detachable headrests
3. 246 = laminated windshield
4. paint code 9832 = Mexico Beige
5. ED = Brown Plaid upholstery
6. Production date: Wednesday, December 13, 1978 ???
7. ??? Number for production planning
8. Export destination: TR ??? I believe my Bus was originally sold in San Diego. Does anyone know if "TR" is the destination code for San Diego?
9. Body model, engine & tranny codes: Campmobile Deluxe, 70 hp, manual transmission. Specifically, right side sliding door, LHD, Campmobile, engine & tranny code: 2.0L & manual.
10. D03: I believe this is a grouped M-code designation, usually grouping sealed beam headlights, rear window defroster, MPH speedometer, etc. However, I've no information relating to this specific code.
11. D27 ??? I believe this may be for CA emissions adherence. Can anybody confirm this?
12. P27 = Westfalia interior code for Berlin Deluxe (stove, sink, refrigerator) with pop-top
13. 005 = heater duct under rear seat/bed
Again, I will appreciate any information.

My British specification, 1973 model-year (manufactured in late-August or early-September 1972), RHD VW 1600 Type 2 Kombi (i.e. Type 23-517) Westfalia Continental motor-caravan does NOT have any M-code plates or stickers of any description that I can find. There are certainly none behind the cab seats on either side. _________________ Regards.

Hello, scuba steve. Happy Birthday Bus, coming up in a few days...
Date of birth: "planned production date" Monday Feb. 15th 1971 .
So, the decoder I use says for your bus. and it's pastel white L90D and your chassis number is #2312148072 on the dash tag? Correct? |
