Happy with the results 👍🏻

Is that not a 40 L tank? My 64 is 40 L but I do need to hold the nozzle correct or most pumps will snap off quite a bit before tank is full. Also don't fill it completely up in warm weather unless you are driving for a bit. Smile

Any idea where the VDO sender mentioned ("VDO stainless steel encoder Veratron from the VDO Marine range") in the bullikartei article can purchased?

Clever to get the original out and to try a beetle style sender.

I suppose you have voided any warranty on the first one Wink

So i went to the local vw aircooled parts dealer to see the bug senders..

Option 1 was a .. VDO sender (VDO stamp and plain AliXpress box) 🧐

Oprion 2 a cheaper one, 1/3 of the VDO ones price 😄

The thing was the cheapo looked better made than the VDO one 😂
Resistance on both the same in full and empty position
I went for the cheap one 👍🏻

First adjusted the float, so the sender can reach the full position
before hitting the top of the tank.
And bending a bit so it don’t hit the side wall of the tank

No problem installing the unit 👍🏻

One other difference with these type of senders is on full the resistance stay’s around 7 ohm (meaning the meter with a full tank is between 3/4 and full. )

Thinking i can solve this problem by adding an extra resistor between the ground and signal wire (bypass to lower the resistance on the sender) not to much so the reserve and empty side reads correct (have some play there)

Ground wire from the sender in the top of the tank to the crossmember above and behind the tank is missing in this photo, the hole for the sheet metal screw is visible, sure you didn't forget it?

Yea I’m sure 😅
In the picture you shared was i still finishing the wiring.
The brown wire on top of the tank is the ground for the sender
Signal not even attached 😄👍🏻

I can see you are not completely finished installing the axle boots… so good place for a suggestion:
Best to orient the axle boot seam (horizontal) to either point towards the front or rear of the bus. Any other orientation makes excess stress / can cause premature failure. Wink

Don’t want to take out the engine again
I know it’s not a big thing taking out an engine
Doing it without damaging the paint… or other parts 🫣
And making an opening (hatch) above the tank
Is also no option for me.
Thats why I’m thinking of installing a bug sending unit 🧐

We just recently hat a thread on a new VDO sender:

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=778197

This is probably the best you can get.
