Great gap work. Better than my factory gaps and they are soldered.

I learned how to do my own lead work but I see more and more classic resto companies switching to glassfibre, carbon fibre and metallized fillers because the technology is better; easier, safer, more predictable (yes lead can survive 60years if there weren’t issues with adhesion, neutralising).

There are always going to be people that want everything the original factory way but it’s not even possible anymore. The original primer chemicals have been illegal for years, the paint technology is totally different/better. There are people still insisting on Glasurit for their vw or Porsche but other than the name on the can there is absolutely not a single thing in common with the original other than they may have matched the code.

On my lowlight with original lead one of the 2 repaints wrinkled only over the original lead so I’m guessing the solvents reactivated and reacted with some residual acid.

Thanks OBus…. I appreciate that.

So as for the Evercoat filler it is hard to sand by hand and sets up much harder then traditional filler.

I use an air board with 80 grit to knock it down then I switch to the orbital, I only hand sand a slight amount, mostly to soften the edges.

The body and paint guys will bring it home with lighter plastics and high build primer.


As for today solders I feel it’s chunky and does not stick or flow like the old lead does ,witch I have not been able to source lately so I just went away from it entirely

Interested to know what's the issue here?

I have big bars of tin I use for lead work and works well.
Are you more concerned about the fact that solder product does not make the tin stick to the metal compared to older product ?

thank you for sharing that very useful tip.
I imagine is is much harder than regular body filler, but it looks like is sands/shapes up OK with the orbital.
Can you file it? or does the feather edge pull away?

So I was somewhat reluctant to share this but the reality is that this is what is necessary for Coach Built Kars that relied heavily on Lead Werk to create even gaps and planes.

I have lost my confidence in today’s body solders and so have stopped using it on the Ghia and Porsche.

My new go to is this Kevlar reinforced plastic where typically lead would have been used.
