I'll just post a link to my build thread here because it's a 1966 Travel Equipment Corp camper and I've posted pictures of the interior in my thread.

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=764877&highlight=travel+equipment

There you have it. May this thread drift back into obscurity until some future researcher needs it.

If anyone wants higher-resolution scans of either the '63 or the '67 brochure, I have some and can email them to you. Just ask.

I just checked out the brochure, they do seem pretty similar, but the pictures aren't all that great to see the details like coathooks, floor, door handles and such. However the 63 Campmobile brochure shows a Kombi(?) and not a cut Panel like mine. Confused

The '67 Sportsmobile brochure is in the What's New queue for tomorrow but you can see it here:

Here is a copy of a letter from the son of the guy who made Campmobile/Sportwagen/Sportmobile conversions. It explains some of the history. I also sent some 67 brochure pics to Everett for the archives.

("Your van is indeed a 1964 Sportsmobile, or Sportswagon as originally
named.
When we had a contract with VW of America, it was called a "Campmobile."

The first two years or so, the cabinets and paneling were solid
birch. In '
63 or '64, we started using ½" plywood with a Westinhouse countertop
type
laminate on both sides.

For the first number of years, all our production was sold through VW of
America and our Fords through the Ford Motor Company. We discontinued
our VW
conversions in the late 70s. Actually, I didn't start the business. My
father did in El Paso, Texas. I joined him shortly after. My father
ended
his participation in '64 when we became a division of the Travel
Equipment
Corp. in Elkhart, Indiana.

Sorry, but all of the old parts, drawings, etc., faded away decades
ago. I
do have several old pieces of literature, which I'm sending.

I did check the website you listed. All of the photos shown are of
our '65
model - same as '64. The full interior is original including the seat
covers. For its age, it still looks very good.")

It's a 63.

I wish there were some Westies running around town, but I'm lucky if I see a Beetle once a week!

Don't be so quick to say, one way or the other. Yes, you were premature in thinking they were the same, but I also think you're premature in dismissing the differences as well. There is a similar flavor there, and literature ('62, '63 and '67), along w/ the '65 sportmobiles, show at least 5 different styles between '62 and '67. The folks at Travel Equipment Corporation seemed to like to improve on things. I don't think I've seen pics of '64 or '66, is yours either of those years?

Their '65 kit is almost the spitting image of the so-42 kit, you have to wonder who came up w/ the idea first... If you want to get the goat of one of your buddies w/ an so-42, you might want to educate him on this fact. I guess this is another reason for the early westy snobs to avoid the later ones, too close to the '65 Sportmobile design. Laughing

Short profile on the roof too. But it's too new to be a Campmobile, probably the same company though, methinks Sportmobile. YMMV

Yep, those look like mine - top badge on the cabinet over the rear bed, bottom on the side of the small, square poptop.

That's a pretty significant vehicle. Anybody know of any others? I doubt if the boys in Auburn Hills (VWOA HQ) even have the slightest clue as to how strongly they should pursue this vehicle...

Man, I want that! That looks like a very good deal.
