|
Just had the headliner put into my 59 ragtop. My interior guy said I needed new quarter/rear window rubbers, so I fought through the Corona Crawl both ways (locals know what that is) to Wolfsburg West and bought a set.
Problems:
1) both quarter window rubbers do not extend outward at lower front quarter turns equal to that of the rest of the circumferences.
2) tried several times, but the rear window would just not go in, as the bottom edge would not hold the window when we went around circumference. This is the same rear window that's been with the car since I bought it in 1979.
3) unlike earlier WW rubbers that I had bought a few years back, these new ones had rather prominent unsightly ridges where the extruded ends were joined.
So, I need a source of a quality rear window rubber.
My interior guy has been doing this for 30+ years, so it's not on him.
Best,

West Coast Metric is known for quality, call them and inquire on their seals, ask about the seam you described. I know they made some quality stuff years ago, decades ago, but I dont know about them now cause these rubber seals I got from them decades ago are still like new, and I have not needed to replace any. I know on some of their rubber they use a modern long lasting EPDM rubber compound Their wing window seals are still perfect after over 3 decades in my Bug! _________________ Help Prevent VW Engine Fires, see this link.....Engine safety wire information

Forget all of those crappy extruded windows seals.
Go with the German seals with the molded corners. I bought a set for my split and while there is a seam it is not as bad as some of the WW stuff I have bought. It is about as good as you are going to get today.
The molded corners will fit properly compared to the generic straight extrusion that thins out when you bend it around a corner causing the problems you describe.

Thanks for the prompt replies!
Will buy a replacement rear window seal from CIP1 or WCM, and hope to get a refund on that WW rubber, as I bought it a few weeks ago and still have the receipt.
Might replace the quarters down the road, as they are already installed...

I had the same problem with WW window rubber but unfortunately I never inspected them and the guy who did my headliner had them installed by a window guy. It was a $140 mistake. I cut out the window rubber and took it back to WW and they refunded my money for the rubber itself but I was out the money for the labor. I didn't make a stink about it because I should've inspected it. I ordered Vewib German rubber from Cip1 and am extremely happy with the fit and finish of it. Pics of the WW rubber

VDUBMYK:
Those photos show EXACTLY what I'm talking about WRT crappy seams...
My interior guy put them adjacent to the trim clips in hope that the eye would be drawn to them instead of the seams.
Will go ahead and order vewib rubbers for the rear/quarters, and go ahead and re-install all 3 with some local help (my interior guy lives ~60 miles away in LA traffic).
Hope can get full refund from WW.
Best,
Thom
Hey WW, what's up with the crappy rubbers? You need to follow up on this issue... _________________ 1 great wife

I've learned to inspect everything before I leave there now. I live 10 minutes away so I'm lucky in that regard. I had the same issue with door rubber seals. I asked for the German ones and the coutnterman tried selling me the Brazilian ones since I could buy "3 sets of these for the price of one of the German ones." The Brazilian ones were crappy and the corners didn't even line up. When I showed him, he understood why I don't mind paying for quality parts. BTW, the German door seals fit great. _________________ 64 stock bug, 12V (converted 6v unit), 40 hp, all documents even sales contract and dealer window sticker! |

I noticed them when I bought them, but was somewhat in a rush to get project done and not really aware of other sources until these responses.
Bought 2 quarters and 1 rear window rubbers, grooved, from CIP1 this AM to re-do the quarters and install the rear next week.
Hope to get refund next week when I do the Corona Crawl back to WW...

WCM seals are extruded just like the WW ones. They may have better seams but the corners will still be an issue.
The ones that CIP1 sells are the VEWIB seals with the molded corners. These are what Heimlich sells. As long as you are getting VEWIB seals you will be happy. _________________ Chris

Sounds like you have got some good advice. This is what makes this SAMBA site so valuable.
Almost all of the VW parts I buy must be purchased sight unseen and shipped. Quality levels can be hit and miss as suppliers change. I bought new window seals in 2010 from WW. Quality and fit were excellent and they still look like new today. Sounds like that would not be my first or best choice in 2019.
Good luck at getting things sorted out. _________________ 1960 beetle

Exactly! That is why I donate 5% of my sales to this website.
IMHO, all sellers should consider donating.
Besides the advice, I don't have to go to numerous swap meets anymore, hoping (but not always getting) for the part(s) that I need...

I had the same problem with a WW rear window seal in my 67 bug. A pro glass installer and I fought it for over an hour. I ended up buying one from West Coast Metric and it went in like butter.
I'm glad to OP returned the WW seal. If we don't report these issues with the quality of the parts, these vendors will keep selling them. _________________ Contact me at Bill@sparxwerks.com

My experience exactly. Fought with WW rear window rubber for 2 days. Finally took the Forums advice and ordered WCM. Went on in minutes. _________________ 67 zenith blue sunroof
