I have my transmission, 88 manual, at the rebuilder after the inspection I was quoted $4500. This included a more robust 4th gear as the only upgrade and the rest just being stock replacement parts and labor. Looks like I could buy from BD, GW or Rancho without giving them a core for under 3800. Any thoughts?

that seems rather pricey. my AT rebuild with a Peloquin and AT cooler was 800 less than that!

Ask Mr Gas in Colorado the same question... I've had a few chats with them, seem to be good. Another good ref was for Arizona Trasaxle.

i'm pretty close friends with Matt Steedle so i can tell you what he's told me...

parts prices have shot up and there are major shortages. he can't even get the same rebuild stuff he used in my auto trans back in december.

unless you find a shop that has inventory and didn't do a price increase on what they have....expect to pay more.

Matt told me in just the few months since he did mine the price went up 500 bux.

welcome to the 'new normal'

Mine came from Arizona Transaxle in May, 2020.

I had to buy a core outright (an extra $650 -- UPS lost the core I was sending them) and I picked up a few extras (Weddle .82 4th, oil splash plates) and also got the clutch kit through them.

Total was under $3000.

If the "more robust 4th gear" is the one from Guard Transaxle, then that may explain the price since Paul Guard's transaxle parts are simply the highest quality available. You won't destroy that GT 4th gear in your lifetime with a 2.2 EJ. Also, as Skills says above, OEM parts are becoming very scarce. The only real fair price comparison is to separate out labour cost from parts cost.

Thanks for the feedback, Yes GT gears for 4th. Probably going to go a different route than the current rebuilder. $1700 plus parts and core, 560 per each GT gear. So, my core is costing me 2206. Basically it sounds like the entire thing is junk: R&P while not "damaged" is not recommended to be reused, 2nd gear toast, 4th toast, 1-2 & 3-4 sliders need sleeves, gear carrier needs sleeved, case needs sleeved, main shaft not recommend to be reused. I have access to another core but there is no saying its any better, costs 400 so not sure I wanna gamble on it.

Given that my carrier and case are super sloppy that could explain why the axles have been "grinding" the plastic caps out at the output flange.
