Couple of little patches on the drivers door done. New lip for the seal:
And this corner is now repaired:
Got some more work to do on it before the skin repair panel can go on. _________________ '68 build thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=557899 |

Hey Jarhead, glad the pictures are helping! The hi-pacs (sometimes also called webber windows) are just doors to get better access to the engine bay. It can be pretty tight in there. I don't have dual carbs but if I fit a bigger motor in future they make things a bit easier.
I got mine from hookys panel shop in the UK. They have a thick flange that you weld into the engine bay side and a stainless steel cover which then screws to the flange.
Great info here: http://www.hookyspanelshop.com/how-to.html _________________ '68 build thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=557899 |

Thanks for the info on what a high pax is, I may have to put some in mine! I have another question about the panels that you have to make, not the store bought ones, but the smaller misc patch panels like around the rear shelf and cross member. What kind of weld are you using, a butt weld or are the panels overlapped using a panel lip tool?
Thanks _________________ 70 Bug

Hey Jar. If I can choose I will generally do a butt weld. It takes a bit more preparation but I feel it's worth it. It's a bit neater and you don't end up with voids between sheets that you can't paint. Also I don't have a tool to make the lip.
It really does depend what and where you are welding and also experience. My welder does not have a great deal of setting adjustment so I find I have to pretty much lay tacks on top of each other for a butt weld. On the plus side this technique helps to not warp the metal too much. Getting a consistent gap on odd shaped panels is definitely the hard part. Making patches as square as possible helps. _________________ '68 build thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=557899 |

I've been following this thread for a while now, extremely helpful. Looking at your build helps me to identify what probably lies ahead for myself. Great job!

I gave in and bought a new door:
Saw this up for sale and decided to snap it up.
And things are getting serious with the body. My Dad and my brother in law sorted me out with a lend of this tipper. My Dad came over and we got it rolled. my plan is to get the roof painted while its like this:
Add gearbox mounts to the list... _________________ '68 build thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=557899 |

Things were dragging on a bit without much progress but I finally got some paint on the roof yesterday.
Learnings:
Don't paint cars outside.
Don't paint cars at night.
Sometimes good enough is good enough.
The roll frame is built from 1 inch square tubing, 2 pieces back to back, and then about 5/6mm plate for the mounts. Reckon I could build a few of these and sell them.

Monthly update:
Replaced clutch return spring
Replaced clutch cable
Replaced accelerator cable
Replaced CV gaitors
Also did a few jobs up front:
Removed bump stop mount
Welded nut for brake pedal stop
Painted steering box and new master cylinder.
Built a steel frame with castors so I can move the body about for painting.
And got some paint on the body. Finish is not the greatest but it will do for me, heater channels etc with be painted black.
Next up is brakes then headliner. _________________ '68 build thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=557899 |

Modified the washer switch with the button for the electric pump so that I don't have to have another hole in the dash:

I was LOOKING for information on how to do this. I love the original bug switches, but with every electric kit out there they give you a dorky switch such as that.. But combining them together in that fashion is brilliant.
Also good work on the 1968. Nice to see it coming along.. Its in alot better shape then mine right now _________________ Signed by the rather insane, ambitious, and very stubborn Darko |

Rain, rain, rain and more rain...
Just need to get these doors painted. Sorting out the trim holes:
Trim position with existing holes. Does not line up at all with body trim:
Trim position lined up with body trim but looks wrong at an angle:
Final position I'm going for, a tiny bit of an angle but I think looks close enough:
Just need to do the other side and I'm ready for the last bit of paint. _________________ '68 build thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=557899 |

The doors are painted.
The headliner is almost done, just the lower side window bits to glue in. I ran out of clips so will do that tomorrow [weather permitting]. Also just need to tuck up the edges over the doors and knock the tabs down. Hopefully it all holds until then!
Turned out pretty good I think:
Big thanks to TX-73 for posting such good info on his [awesome] build. I have a slightly different headliner but just great info - highly recommended to anyone doing one.

Scraf question.. When you installed the lower front wheel well panel did you close in the bottom section near the hinge or did you leave it open? |
