Last few before blue!
Found a bit of rot in the cradle. It’s a stupid design, as it funnels water into gearbox mount turrets if you drive in the rain.
All welded up. I’ve finished the prep and seam sealing, so it should be completely raptored blue by this time tomorrow.

Outstanding work. Out of curiosity did you go for sea blue #1 or #2? What’s the colour match like when comparing to your OE paint on the van? |

Ah, I didn’t know about the variants until I read that thread a couple of weeks back, I just gave them the code. It’s not the same colour underneath, but close enough, the Raptor is a sort of opaque milky white, so it lightens the colour you add slightly. _________________ http://vintageautorepair.co.uk/ |

Ah, thanks...colour looks nice. I’ve got a 13w deluxe, sea blue/white due in paint shortly. Sea blue #2 looks like the front runner. Will be following as you rebuild for some pointers for mine! |

Cheers, I should also mention that it doesn’t photograph very accurately either. I think because i’m lighting the shots with an led light. I’ll get some more pics in daylight soon👍 _________________ http://vintageautorepair.co.uk/ |

Not a huge amount going on here, I got the ‘box and axles back in and made up the rear brake pipes. I put new handbrakes cables in and had a moment of panic when I couldn’t get the threaded end to slide through the guide tube. Something was blocking it and obviously it’s all hidden under bellypans. With hindsight I should have checked this at an earlier stage. Luckily the obstruction was near the front of the tube and I could file it down a bit. I think I must have got over excited with the welder when I was tacking the tube to the crossmember.
Also made a start on repairing the dash👍

Repairs to the A pillars before the dash goes back in.

A small update. I’ve finished repairing the dash and welded it back in. Next up was to repair the windscreen frames which were both rusty along the lower sections. I wanted to repair it without disturbing the front panel you can see, so hopefully the repair should be hidden under the seal.

Great thread!
Can I hijack slightly and ask you some advice on rustproofing, as I'm finding the number of different bits of advice and range of products is causing me a bit of decision paralysis. Plus you're also in the UK, so we're in the same boat in that regard.
It looks like you're using Bonda primer, which I've seen recommended elsewhere so look's like a good shout, but I was also looking at this:
https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/rust-remover-1-litre/
which is your classic phosphoric acid rust converter to spray onto bare metal either where I can't get to the inside of panels, or to keep bare metal from rusting before I get to paint it, but I'm worried about then removing it so that primer will adhere to the panel afterwards. |

I’ve never used that particular product, but have used similar, mainly on small areas of pitting. Unless you’re leaving metal for months, it shouldn’t be an issue. If it is, just slap some bonda on it, that way you don’t need to remove it.
For areas you can’t get to, i’d really recommend Dinitrol ML. You can spray it with a diffuser, so it goes everywhere and it creeps like nothing else. It was recommended to me and I used it in the roof frame cavities of my bay. A couple of days after, i looked up under the gutter and could see where the dinitrol had crept right through the seams of the roof frame. Excellent stuff. _________________ http://vintageautorepair.co.uk/ |

Very nice work.
1 question I have always wondered about seeing this type of work. I see you replacing a lot of metal patches where nobody will ever be able to get to the backside.
How does one deal with future rust or corrosion to such pieces? My only guess to be able to paint or treat some of these pieces would be to dip the entire bus in plating or something. |

Another quick update. Engine is built up now. I’ll do a separate post on it later, but here’s a pic of it for now.
Next job is the cab area. I spent ages deliberating over keeping the dash looking rough or painting it. In the end I decided to paint it.
I welded up a couple of extra holes that had been added to the left of the speedo pod, then it’s loads of prep. Crazy really as you don’t see much of it once the mats and kick panels are in place. I bare metalled the dash and headlight bowls as they’re the only bits you really see, then gave them a quick coat of etch primer. Hopefully I’ll get the paint on this week. I also welded the totem pole vent back in after i’d prepped behind it.

Happy new year everyone. A few little jobs ticked off. I started to prep the inside ready for some paint and obviously found some more holes. Only pin holes though, so welded them up, then treated the whole panel with kurust and bonda.
Then I prepped the cargo floor ready for Raptor. I’m not a huge fan of it inside as it doesn’t look quite right, but I figured it’s quick and easy and will be under a ply floor anyway. 10% tint with cloud white👍

Do you have any updates for us, is it finished yet?
My buddy just bought the 66 double door 21 window bus that came up for sale recently. Hopefully his isn't as rusty as yours, we won't know for sure until it is stripped down and blasted. Here are the pics of his new project.
