Are the 64-67 split and early bay window (68-73ish) under dash heater trees interchangeable? _________________ WANTED:

I'd say no! The Plump Truck is a very early '68 and the difference is considerably. However, being a hack myself, anything can be done! _________________ Some people are so busy being clever they don't have time enough to be wise. |

Good night.
Even if seen many times, now that I need the information, I don’t find the answer.
How should be the cargo area of a '67 deluxe painted? Top color or below color? In my case cumulus white over seablau. Floor and bulkhead white and panels blue?
Thank you.
Pau
P.s. I have the example of my former 21w, but it was so poorly restored that I don’t trust that pattern.

I didn’t check the torque on the wheels often enough and wheel almost fell off the other day. Yadda yadda new drum and new lugs.
However now I’m wondering if I should chase the threads with the die instead of throwing them out. They’re originals. Maybe I’m just being crazy and need to let go. Thoughts?

A chase is different than a die; a chase just tries to re- form the thread profile, and a die cuts new ones. I think a die would mean a thinner, slightly smaller thread, which has less grip. I see lots of bolts with squared threads, and wonder how much holding power they’ve lost; I also hate tossing an OG part, but on the wheels… maybe find some nicer ones.
Only the threads up by shoulder look really bad, so maybe take to local shop for an opinion. Mine has a chase set and has redone a spring plate bolt for me (as opposed to new shiny garbage bolts they didn’t trust). Still holding tight.
Ps - there’s a fantastic book about fasteners by a racing guy, Carrol smith, that discusses threads and holding power. Pretty sure he’d advocate tossing for new, though. _________________ Craig K

Rather than take mine apart, I am hoping someone knows this off the top of their head:
How deep are the headlight buckets in the nose of a 63 - 65?
Didn't find the info in a brief search. _________________ Craig K

I don't know but isn't '66-'67 allowed in that question? |

I wasn't sure if the shape changed in 66. Just wanted to make sure the measurement matched my 65. _________________ Craig K

Deepest point 5 3/8". Both passenger and drivers' side matched. Straight edge used along the outer rims of the buckets. measured from a 65 SC

Thanks Ken - I figured someone out there had their buckets empty. Sorry it was you :) Any progress on truck recently? _________________ Craig K

I didn't get a good answer on the bay window 'stupid questions' thread, nor in searching - I'll try being stupid here:
will the 1/3 - 2/3 front seat covers I have from a 67 work on the 1/3-2/3 front seats in my 70? OK if not perfect, as what's on their now is shredded fabric and springs. I also have a decent set of backrest horsehairs, if they are similar enough...
Having spent too much on the 65, the 70 is getting any hand-me-downs that work. _________________ Craig K

To place an answer for the next chea - ah, thrifty! - person wanting to know this: yes, the seat covers and pads from a mid-60s-up 1/3 -2/3 bus will fit an early bay (71 or so?), but the pads may need some trim work and the covers may not look factory.
If I get around to it this winter I'll post pics. _________________ Craig K

Can you safely stick a sturdy round metal bar in the jacking point to lift with a trolley jack?
I started to try it with an old idler pin from the front beam a few weeks ago and it seemed to work OK, but I needed to raise the truck quite high at the rear on one side, so I chickened out and raised it on the rear torsion tube.
Would it have been safe to lift it like that, or is there a point at which a bar just slides out of the jacking point? The idler pin seemed to be a perfect fit (or as much as a round peg in a square hole can be), and it would have saved some faffing around. _________________ Andy

Search online for a "Porsche Jack pad" or the sorts; it's just a solid metal disc welded to a piece of square bar that fits in the factory Jack tube on the chassis of these old German vehicles. That being said, if I had access to a floor jack and a block of wood I'd rather lift the rear of the bus by the hoop under the transmission. _________________ Never argue with an Idiot. Many of the aftermarket jack points look more decorative than functional to me; OGs are often rusty shells. If i have a flat on firm ground I'd use one in a pinch but not to work on the car any length of time, and certainly not at any height. _________________ Craig K

I made these and the gravity seems to always be down on them without a tendency to pull out.

Less of a question and more of an observation:
It’s funny how I search for a specific part for a couple years and then, once I find it… 3 show up in the classifieds. Maybe it’s just me but… every… time. |

Yes! Also the ones that show up later are in better condition for less money _________________ How to Post Photos
