That is no teaser. That is straight out car porn! Makes my tools go crazy!

I just got my case back from being Chromated by Chris Childs! Came out brilliantly! But yours looks way better, since it is a short block already!

Keep on going, you are doing great!

That right side upper control arm should be resting tightly on the snubber. You may have broken torsion bars in that beam. Mine takes a lot of force to lift it off even the bar without the snubber.

This may explain the lopsidedness in your front suspension.

By modifying euro headlights to take sealed beams you do not have a side light. Is that an issue?

The engine looks most superb. Very nice indeed!

i went out to the garage and checked it as soon as i saw this. it was sitting tightly against the snubber at that time. after a ton of grease and some reassembly everything sits nicely now. it even tightened up some of my hood and door gaps. i think the lopsidedness was from crusted up grease. i have thought through a sequence of events that kinda makes it makes sense:

the car was flat towed from wyoming to kansas city in 1988. i think some of the front end was reworked right before that trip. the wheel bearing grease was pretty fresh. the shift coupler was removed. then the car sat. i speculate the passenger tire went flat first and then it sat for like 20 years with one flat and one not. the grease solidified and froze the beam in place a bit wonky.

i think the beam would have popped free the first time i hit a good sized pot hole.

i did not modify those buckets it was someone in the past.

im not sure what my state thinks about running lights. its not a big deal to put something else in there. i have a variety of headlight buckets in parts mountain.

i got the king and link pins resolved. i ended up finding a local shop to work on the king pins. Gary, the shop owner, was awesome. he has a 1953 ragtop. took me for a spin around town.

here are all my washers for shimming the link pin offset. spec is 7mm. i was at 7mm on the passenger side and 6.7 on the driver. thats pretty good.

Wow! Modified is being kind there, butchered seems more appropriate. I think this car deserves a proper set of headlights, whether Euro or US spec. Less to go wrong that way and more try to it’s delivery spec…

Great update today, thanks 😎

Wow, that engine looks crazy good, probably even better than factory fresh!
Has the main case been wetblasted and is this the colour of the bare metal? Or has there been some kind of protective layer aplied on to the surface?

cleaned up magnesium will be kinda dull gray/silver. it turns to powdery white really fast.

the gold stuff is a chemical surface treatment. im not a chemist or anything like that so im not entirely clear on what it is or how it functions chemically. the basic jist is that the magnesium from the engine block can oxidize quickly. it will rust into white powdery dust. the surface treatment keeps that from happening.

my understanding is that a similar treatment was originally applied to the block from the factory.

Chromating is the process. DOW7 I believe is the Golden hued one.
Chris Childs of Childs Motorsports Chromates cases. 510-734-5977. Tell him Jimbo sent you!

in addition to the protective quality and the factory correctness i also like that the motorcar has a heart of gold improbability drive like the spaceship in hitchhikers guide to the galaxy.

"...the only starship with infinite improbability...you are never sure where you'll end up or even what species you'll be when you get there..."

i guess its kinda like the neal young song too.

i have some more progress images.

i got the shift coupler attached. this was exciting because i could try shifting it into gears. the transmission moves through all the gears!

i took some puctures down the central coumn duting that part.

You are moving fast! Wish I could. Everything is looking great! Keep up the great work, you are doing the car justice! Your Dad would be proud!

You need to recreate the picture of you back by the engine with a 2x4 holding the decklid up. That would be very cool!

dont stress the pace Jimbo!. its warm where you are. you can work on your car all winter long while us midwesterners are buried under snow!

i had the same thoughts about that picture. i think ill do a photo shoot and recreate a bunch of my before pictures.

finally got the heat exchangers opened up and cleaned out. those things spent like 3 months soaking in an array of WD, PB, acetone and soapy water. i negelected to take internal photos but i would have happily eaten off of them.

rebuilt a starter motor. this one is a 4R so april 1960. the internals looked pretty good. small detail i noticed - it had 4 brushes... the 1953 that i have with the truck has only 2 brushes.

here you can see the easy starter motor access panel a previous owner cut into the luggage tray. im not a wleder and im not learning today. there are a couple hidden shame type spots like that. ill look back to them eventually. at the beginning of this project i elected not to address purely aesthetic metalwork problems untill after i had driven the car for some time
