Nice catch when you shut your car down in time. It looks like you diverted a big problem. I bought one of these "torque miester" tools years ago and it's paid for itself. Of course back then it was probably 1/2 the current prices. I torque it to the correct rate with an old sears torque wrench that only goes to 75 lbs. Still not a bad price though.

| That 3/4 breaker with long pipe was my go to for this for 50 plus years. I put a c clamp on the pivot on the breaker to try to prevent it from bending the ends over the pivot with all that torque. I now also use the torque meister tool. |

Yesterday, all was good and the car was running great. I dropped my son off at school and pulled up to a very busy intersection. The light turned green and we were off. 1st gear, perfect, clutch in to shift to second and pop, on more clutch. Oh shit. I quickly got it in 3rd and had to make some decisions. I got off the main drag and took an alternate route with less lights. Next light, made it, next light was red. Had to turn it off and start it in first to get it going. Went 1st to 3rd to 4th. Hey that was pretty smooth. Made it to the neighborhood, had to down shift, hey 4th to 3rd was pretty smooth. Phew, Made it home. 10 miles with no clutch in rush hour traffic, not how I planned on starting my day. Once home, I fired the bus up and drove that to work.
I would imagine the clutch cable broke, but I have t been able to look at at yet. I should have time next week, if it doesn’t snow. _________________ __________

Hoping for an easy fix for ya! It is kinda fun driving with out the clutch, I practice it every once in a while. My nissan frontier is much harder to get right,
I really do detest computer controls in automobiles. |

Well, that sux to read about the possible clutch issues.
Good on you for being able to drive the car home "clutchless." There are many that don't have that talent and would just opt for the tow truck to get the car home.
Lets all hope it's something simple like, a broken cable. _________________ I have learned over the years.

Well, unfortunately it’s not the clutch cable or the throw out arm return spring. Seems like it’s gotta be pressure plate/throw out bearing related.
Total bummer. I guess I’m gonna put it back together and wrap my head around pulling this motor. That’s gonna be a lot of work outside in the cold. My DC is taking up the garage and it’s on Jack stands. _________________ __________

A stab in the dark but, is it possibly a broken clutch cable tube causing this issue?
I've never experienced that but, it's worth looking into before pulling the engine.
Lift the rear seat and have a look under the inspection plate to see if there is a broken weld there.
I totally understand the cold weather wrenching dislike. I need to change the oil in my Tundra today and it's cold out, even for Oregon. I'm really not looking forward to doing that minimal task ATM. _________________ I have learned over the years.

I'm always amazed at the resilience of some of your people who live in cold areas of the US and Canada. I just can't comprehend that there are days that are that cold you cannot work. I know of plug in oil heaters and winter cars etc but the conditions just don't compute for my Australian brain.
I mean winters for me is the decision whether I need to put a t-shirt under my shirt or not and should I take my jacket with me in the car if I go out somewhere just in case it drops to less than 10C/50F. _________________ 1968 1500 RHD Lotus White Beetle since birth. I run a Kats VW-15 oil sump heaters on both of my ACVWs. These days I pretty much use them year round.
67rust gave me the motivation I needed to take it all apart again. I pulled the rear seat and the access panel, everything looked good there. I was stumped. So I decided to pull the Bowden tube and just pull out the whole cable. Upon pulling the BT I found the frayed section of cable. Looks like it was possibly rubbing on the metal tube, the end of the BT had a bunch of shit in it so I’m guessing it wasn’t fully seated. Who knows.
I headed to town and ordered a new one from Autozone. It cost me $14 after the $20 credit I had and it will be here on Monday.

Well, that's better news than a broken clutch cable tube weld.
You'll have your car back on the road in short order. _________________ I have learned over the years.

The Monsta is back in action!
New Autozone (Pioneer brand) clutch cable installed, lubed with Rock N Roll grease and adjusted to how I like it.
Let’s talk about the root of the problem. The Bowden Tube was not seated on the clutch tube which cause the cable to run on the edge of the clutch tube and fray. I did not install this BT, it was installed when the transaxle was rebuilt 7000 miles ago.
I went to re-install the Bowden tube and realized that it didn’t fit over the clutch tube, I put it on the vise and used a 1/2” drill bit to hog out the female end of the tube. After this 2 minute modification the Bowden tube fit perfectly. I thought it felt pretty good before, but obviously there was an issue. Now it’s buttery smooth. _________________ __________

Nice to see the "Monsta" back in action doing it's thing!
Ya know, it would be cool to see some Shredder P action pics of his skiing greatness. I'm sure that a pic or two posted here would be acceptable as, they go along with the story of the car and it's use as a transport to and from the ski resort.
Keep the updates coming, I dig the story of this car. _________________ I have learned over the years.
