Wondering what is out there in terms of trailer setups that can be towed by a Westy Vanagon. I was at a campout recently and I saw some Westfalia trailers....they looked pretty nice! I would like to be able to put most of my gear, and maybe even be able to mount bike racks on the trailer instead of the van. If you have any pics of a sweet setup...please post!

I don't know who made it but my trailer rocks. I've installed a double bike rack to the back of it and the tow behind double bike trailer for my kids folds flat and is attached to the lid with a spider bungy. I actually thought it was home made with a car carrier lid until I met another vanagon with the identicle rig. It's all steel sides on a steel chasis. It weighs almost nothing and holds our Coleman, folding picnic table, chairs, firewood, beer cooler, kids toys, etc, etc. It's great having the floor of the Vanagon completely clear when we're on the road.

That looks perfect. I can't tell because the tree is in the way....how did you put the bike rack on and what type of rack is it?

Sorry about that. I try to keep the trailer out of most of my pics. That's just the best one I had. The rack used to be mounted on the front bumper when I got the van. I simply used the existing hardware to move it to the tail gate. I'll get a better picture.

I just got a Coleman Versatrailer which looks a lot like the one you posted. It has a fiberglass top that props open. I have an 84 with that same carmel color and am painting my trailer to match. I repainted the top bright white to mtch my VW and will hopfully get the finishing coat on today or tomorrow. I'll be sure to post pics when done. I plan on building a bike rack for the top f the trailer to hols bout bikes. Ian

OK, I'm really happy with this thing and I think it's about the perfect set up. I bought it (Coleman Versatrailer) at a garage sale for $160 and redid it this past week, while on FLMA leave. I put on new wheels, repainted it to match my Westy, repainted the fiberglass top and changed out the hardeware to all stainless steel stuff, and made a custom aluminum bike rack that can carry up to 4 bikes. This thing is super light, but can carry a ton of stuff, freeing up the inside of my Westy. It is also big enough that the kids will be able to "camp out" in it when we go on trips. I've even considered designing a tent for it so that it's like a little pop top sleeper. With the little talegate open it would make about a 5'10" bed. Anyway, I'm really stoked about this thing and can't wait to take it out for the first trip. With two kids now it was geting very tight in the Westy. Ian

Yeah that is perfect. Now I just need to find one! I like how you set up the bike rack and that it was reasonably inexpensive.

I've seen some in craig's list if you search for "Coleman Versatrailer" or "Coleman Versa Trailer". Good luck finding what you're looking for, Ian

Here's what I built in my cabinet shop this winter. I used a 40"X48" frame from Harbor Freight and built the box out of MDO plywood.
It's a WESTRAILIA

That is pretty cool as well. What did you use for the top and do you think you could mount bike racks on it?

The whole box including the top is 3/4" MDO exterior plywood. I have a bike rack for the hatch, but do plan on mounting canoes on top someday.
At that point I'll have to extend the tongue also. The trailer frame is quite short as it comes.

I don't know where you live, but the little red one might be worth a trip to pick up. It could turn out pretty sweet after a little TLC. Ian.

Keep a look out for Sears Allstate trailers. Several FMBC campers use them. You can probably search for trailers on www.fullmoonbusclub.com to see what folks use.

Here are a couple links to trailers. I just missed one for $200 on Craigslist. Next time I'll have to be faster. If anyone knows of a small trailer in Oregon/Washington, I'm looking to buy something similar. Thanks!

How can those prices for the sportsrig trailers be justified?! Maybe if IT could pull my westy instead of the other way around.... Shocked
