I have a 73 super beetle 1600 that I am dropping into my manx. However I have been at a standstill with the relocation of the oil cooler. The standard doghouse super beetle air shroud is too wide and hits the roll bar mounts. I have a 36hp fan shroud that I am looking to modify in order to fit. I was thinking of cutting a hole in the shroud for a hose to redirect air to the oil cooler and build a small sheet metal box around it. But I was wondering, how crucial is maximized air flow to the oil cooler? I've seen pictures of people who have bigger air coolers behind the shroud but there is no fans on them, just hanging there.
Any opinions or ideas on how I should approach this would be much appreciated!
Thanks,

Are you using that relocation plate thingy to move it from the shroud to external? If so, just put it near one of the axle tubes, and use an electric fan. If you do that, you can use the non-dog 36 shroud and it looks a whole lot cleaner. _________________ Build thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=212747

if you remove the stock cooler, to attach hoses for a remote cooler, in a non-dog house set up, you do alter the air flow inside the fan house.
you may want to leave the stock cooler in place in the non-dog house set up to clear your rollbar and add a remote cooler with electric fan someplace else, you can pick up the inlet to your cooler off a special oil pump cover and return the cooled oil to the case via the front case plug (remove plug and tap resulting hole for return fitting)
if your running a full flow filter, you simply add the extra cooler AFTER the filter (best to filter warm oil rather than cold oil)
Ps the fan housing is supposed to be pressureized with a balanced flow of air sent to the heads and cylinders despite an off center and unidirectional blower. it is all factory set up to give balanced cooling, Any cutting of the fan house to send some of the air to a remote location will alter the balance of cooling air, which can cause one area of the motor to overheat, despite only a small percentage of cooling air being bled off to the remote location. location and size of the hole will effect the air balance, unless you can predict the correct placing and size of hole, you will upset the air balance. the air flows in a complicated path differing greatly form left to right side, to compensate for the offset fan and its directional flow to one side.
keep the stock housing uncut, and run a remote electric fan cooled cooler , DO NOT try to tap into the fan house air supply to cool your remote cooler, that can result in overheated heads. _________________ Help Prevent VW Engine Fires, see this link.....Engine safety wire information
