Unfortunatley the previous owner of my car changed the original engine due to a broken crank. The car ,(i was building another engine for him ,which is how i came to end up owning it myself)came with a mid sixties 1200 with most of the original ancillarys on it .it seems though the car always had the air filter shown in the pic below ,but i am sure this is wrong .i think it should have the horizontal cylinder type ,but none of my books gives any accurate engine info.
oh, i now have a 30hp (couldnt find a 25hp)so it at least looks about right ,i just hope it doesnt need the really hard to find /expensive cylinder one.Car was built on 9th july 53

I'm guessing your car is a '53? If it is, you'll want a single strap air cleaner. The air filter you currently have installed is a 1956-59 type.
While you're at it, change the rear apron |

Never thought i would see this thread again.in fact i have a diifferent engine in the car now to the one posted above. After i posted this i had an email from someone offering to sell me one at 150 euros and decided it was way too much for what looked like a rusty example .The cylinder type is also correct for an early 53 and actually seem more common in the forsale area.
I still havnt got one ! Its really down to what you think its worth and how badly you want it .I still enjoy my car even with the wrong bits but if i stumble across the right stuff at sensible prices i would buy it of course.
I recently bought the correct pulley and for 20 pounds i dont begrudge the expense.

Thanks for the reply. It's just not cheap and I don't want to over pay. I don't really need it but you don't see them too often so I thought I would pick it up.
Any other opinions?
Any help is appreciated. |

The 54/55 ones range from $200-300, depending on condition. A 53 one will obviously be a bit higher. |

Fate it seems ,is not without a twist of irony as today i went to the Slough swapmeet here in the UK .Would you believe i found the filter for my car .It was missing part of the strap but it should be an easy fix .Of course its going to be a lot easier if one of you fine people post a nice close up pic of the strap so i can reproduce it
I,ll post a pic of it later tonight. Not bad for me to find a part in 1 year 8 months .53 only small arrow MPH speedo next!!! |

Not sure if anyone mentioned it or not, but there are two different styles of Single Strap Air Cleaners..There right, theres 54/55, then 53 has a style all of its own..Im sure if you check out Erics 53 Oval..youd see exactly what you need..something with the bottom lip of the Air Cleaner on a 53, I think.... _________________ Valentine, Ray J Sr.

This is the picture of the one i bought .I had done some research before from your pictures Everett so i knew i was on to a winner .The picture shows i have the buckle side of the strap and with Everetts pics i should easily be able make the other side. The overall length may be trial and error though . My only concern is the state of the filter material .Should i try and clean this with white spirit ? or leave alone ?
Atfer a clean
It cost me £120 .I felt pretty sick afterwoods but felt slightly better when i saw the later filter with the flange at £300!!!.In fact i only stayed an hour after and went home with a mild case of depression.

I made the strap today (one in picture was the first one,i have made them again since as i wasnt happy) but still need to spot weld the ends .I also took out the dents with a 10mm allen key ground to fit between the filter mesh and the top. Also removed paint.I am quietly pleased with the results:Big thanks to Everett for the pics and research into this. This site is unbeatable for this kind of inforamation.
Second strap made and filter stripped
Painted

The sticker in the ad looks like the one for the later filter.I will do a bit more searching.I am sure i have seen them on here as there was a debate on the position of it. |

there were three styles of that air cleaner. The first had no strap, but had a wing screw in the center.
The second style was what you have. They changed from the wing screw to the strap
The third style added a metal lip around the edge of the filter element so it covered the gap between the element and the housing to prevent water from getting in.
