OMG! Found my original radio and faceplate stored away in my mom’s 1973 412 wagon I still have. Got the retainers, knobs and all the original noise suppression stuff that came with it...and all the instructions for parts and installation. Actually bought this radio in Germany while on summer vacation in 1970. It is a “Frankfurt USA “ model and I even have the original bill of sale. Placed it in the dash real quick just to see it again.
A happy Samba Bill

What he said ^^^^.
Does it have the snap-in part behind that faceplate? |

| Never had a snap in piece. The faceplate mounts directly to the control shafts. Then I use the blind plastic chrome nuts. Then the install is complete with the really important rear angle support. It was installed like that for as long the bus was driven. I installed this radio in the fall of 1970 after bringing it back from Germany and it never gave me problems. |

I'm not sure this is the right faceplate for a bus.
The faceplate in the photo is the one for the bug, that has a vertical dashboard and that faceplate has a "slope" to mount the radio not perfectly horizontal, with a better positions for knobs and to not interfering (in a bug) with the windshield wiper motor.
The back part of the faceplate is very important because is the part that uses the "wings" in the rear of the dashboard to give a secure lock to the whole assembly. |

| Back in the day this is what I ordered for a ‘67 bus from Blaupunkt. My Westfalia camper was originally delivered without a radio and picked up in Hannover as part of the american tourist program...then after spending a summer in Europe was delivered to Seattle. So this is not an install by any dealer...I installed it. But this in 1970 is what came with this model radio. It may or may not be correct for a bus but fits perfectly and worked great all those years. I have all the install instructions and also for the antenna mounting. Still works like new! Wonder if any other Samba people have a sloped ‘67 faceplate like this? Would be interesting to find out. |

I've been saying that for a while, lots of people didn't have the money to buy a radio when they bought their car. Lots of people bought the radio a year or two later when the car was paid off. Or when they brought their VW to the states from Europe. A 2-3 year later radio is absolutely period correct IMO _________________ Stop dead photo links! Post your photos to The Samba Gallery! |

This is the original Blaupunkt AM/FM/SW radio that was in my 1967 European SO42 Westfalia camper when I got it from the original owners family. Looks like the same face plate. Don't remember if it works. I haven't driven this Bus since 2001. _________________ 58 PGSG Westfalia

Box on Wheels,
There it is! Looks like the same faceplate. Wish I had your radio because it is the german version. By the way, is your antenna mounted on the driver’s side like mine? I do not see many like that. Thanks for that wonderful photo.

Yes, my antenna is mounted on the drivers side also. It had the curved antenna with the Red tip. Unfortunately, it broke off years ago. _________________ 58 PGSG Westfalia

| That is what Blaupunkt called for on the mounting. My antenna has the black base with all else chrome. Straight with the chrome ball at the tip. |

Is the Blaupunkt radio the superior sound vs the Sapphire V I have in my bus?

It kinda depends on the functionality of the radio after 53 years of use. The difference is that the Blaupunkt radios they are showing are multi-band (AM/FM/SW) radios and that your Sapphire V is an AM only radio. The sound comparison between their radios on AM band and yours are probably pretty much the same.
FYI, I just had a highly desired (by me) but weak performing (poor volume level) 12 volt Sapphire VI AM/FM radio monaural radio for my '67 Campemobile serviced by radio Guru Rich Langenwalter in Colorado who did an AWESOME job and it came back looking and sounding and tuning like new (it received a new sound transformer. or some shit like that). Mine was old and troubled but a good technician can fix them up!

Here's the radio. Not sure of the make. A seller on here had it restored. It has it's own snap-in for the wide hole or it can be installed in the smaller hole. Not sure if it will fit the Blaupunkt surround. I'll check.
