I just bought a complet header for my car. Stock 1600. I have to take off the tins under the cylinders, is this going to cause my engine overheating?? |

As they spread the air and force it over the fins on the back side of the cylinders and block some of the air they increase the air flow over the heads too. I would think the cylinders need them to keep from running hotter on the bottom side than the top! Probably not too big a deal for a drag race engine. _________________ 1960 Beetle And 1679cc DP W-100 & Dual Zeniths! |

Deflector tins (below cylinders).
Don't run without them. _________________ 1972 Westy Hardtop/Type-4 2056cc

are you referring to heater box sled shaped tins? Those protect pushrod tubes and deflect hot air away from engine. The cylinder air deflector plates or cool tins that attach to cylinder studs under cylinders is an absolute must to direct air around cylinders. |

He means the sled tins. They do get in the way of my Bugpack merged header, mine are still on but I had to bend them. The little deflector fins won't be in the way and would be difficult to remove anyway.

I think he needs to reply as to just what tins, but there is no need to remove the cylinder tins for a header, just the "sled" tins on some apps.or trim&modify to fit if you want to keep them.I personaly dont run any of that stuff but I think there good for road cars as well as offroad cars in directing&helping the used heated air out the rear easyer.my butt has been chewed so much on my spellen& grammer(still in cali)I no longer have a rear.... |

I personally run as much of the tins possible on all the engines Ive had. Like said before, its essential in cooling and them germans put them there for a reason. I just like to "massage" them into place if necessary.
Ohhhhh and Mark. Its "easier" with an i. lol jus kidding bro. you ragged yourself so id figure id laugh with you. _________________ 57 Ragtop

yes i mean the sled thins, which protect the push rods.
People told me that they are there only for protecting push rods. I guess helps for cooling. |

Unless you're smarter than the VW engineers, i'd suggest using every piece of tin the engine originally came with. Because if it wasn't needed, they wouldn't of put it on at the factory.
By every piece i don't mean just the large pieces, I mean the hoover bit, the lower tins that close off by #2 and #4 and the little square tins that fit in the heads (which no replacement head includes).
My 2180 with 9.5cr in a full body sedan has the stock oil cooler with the only additions of 1.5qt sump and remote filter and runs cool as a stock 1600.
That's because I use all the factory tin. _________________ Glenn

It's not hard to make your own tin so you can use the header and not sacrifice cooling.

Just get a header that clears the tins and thermostat and a set of Type 126 tins.
